happy holidays all,

just wondering if anyone has any opinions/options to getting a shoei helmet from japan....in north america it's the RF-1100 series, but in japan it's the XR-1100.

I'm liking a few designs on the Shoei japan site... XR-1100 Beowulf --> http://jp.shoei.com/products/ja/helmet_detail.php?id=414

anyone know of any local stores that carry XR-1100's or that might be able to order it?.. (didn't see it on ebay, or find anything about them on this site)

btw, the XR-1100 and RF-1100 are the supposed to be the same....but does anyone know the rating of the XR-1100?...DOT or Snell? is it approved for Ontario, Canada?
(didn't find any mention of it on the Shoei Europe site)

From what I understand, the XR-1100 carries the Japanese JIS and European ECE safety ratings, not DOT or Snell. As far as I know, it's pretty much the same helmet as the RF-1100, which makes the rating discrepency a bit silly. I know it's been stated before, but it's high time we have a world safety standard.

RF-1100: North America
XR-1100: rest of world

thanks for the responses...

from a few review sites, and the Snell site http://www.smf.org/certlist/std_M2010#S

it seems the XR-1100 is Snell M2010 approved, just want to confirm before I buy, does that mean it's approved for Canada?

I've searched and didn't find anything specific from the MTO.

You need DOT. XR-1100 would be ECE/JIS certified along with SNELL2010. The only thing they look for here is DOT approved, Snell is extra.

You may be able to pass by explaining to the officer that Snell is higher than DOT and since its a Japanese helmet, its not DOT. He/She may understand that since its a better rating than DOT, it's a safe helmet....but if they lack the knowledge, they may not take your word for Snell > DOT. Not worth the risk in my opinion.

You'd be better off getting a Matte Black RF-1100 (DOT/M2010) and have it airbrushed or decal it up to your liking.

Find an online vendor in the UK and have them ship it.

There is a chance that you might get hassled because there is no DOT rating written on the helmet but I think that would be very unlikely.
