Shoei GT-Air Group Buy? Sound's too good to be true?

So a buddy of mine mentioned to me the other day that the guy he bought his gear from is having a group buy for Shoei helmets...apparently the guys is trying to unload his inventory...or so he says.

My buddy is a new rider as well, so we're both newbies when it comes to gear.

Now, I just bought my Icon helmet not even a month ago...and I'm wondering if this is even worth it.

He says that he sells the GT-Air helmets at 25% off MSRP - only these colours:

http://www.canadasmotorcycle.ca/shoei-gt-air-helmet.html

Now...I asked...MSRP is 549.99 and he sells them for $412.49 and the Glossy Black and White helmets he sells for $389.99 (MSRP $519.99).

Is this really a group buy type deal? or have you guys seen these helmets at the "sale" price before.
As mentioned, buddy and I are newb's and don't want to get hosed for $400 + tax for a helmet thinking it's a "good" deal...when's it's really regular priced.

I've looked around...and I see the helmet's sell for $500+ regularly...am I missing something?

Wait till winter and you can probably get it for $300 or so.

wait... is this guy selling from his basement/garage/back of a van or he has a legitimate store front?

if anything, I'd ask to see the helmet and carry it off without the box after transaction to avoid walking off with a box filled with a phone book.

At the end of the day, if your gut is telling you something's wrong, you should probably trust your instinct.

Call around and ask for the price of the helmet you want. If the price is still lower than all the competitors, get it.

Thanks for the tip guys.
I think it's a mom/pop type store front.

I may just pass...a little concerned about putting a deposit and never seeing it or a helmet again.

I had a Journey GT-Air for a short while, it was too small. This helmet fits smaller than other brands like Icon (I am S in icon, M in the GT-Air).

If they had the Journey graphic in M i would buy, sold out everywhere....I will probably end up with a RF from the bike show

Shoei's are great helmets if you have a rounder head shape. Not so good a fit if you have an oval or long oval head shape.

Really? I've been told and have experienced the complete opposite. I have a long oval headshape and wear a Shoei. I had an HJC RPHA-10 which felt pretty roundish compared to the RF-1100.

Ive bought stuff from the site before. Its safe :) they are located in Montreal

wheres the shop selling them? if its cash and carry ill take one.

With helmet, you'd rather get it from a reputable place, either storefront or online.

These days, China replica is ridiculously close to the real thing, very hard to tell the difference. Saw a bunch of Arai on a China trip, tags, even the freakin protective plastic sticker on the shield is very real... but one thing gave it away... said 'Made in Japan' and only selling for RMB 300 about CAD $50.

You have to know a few things about Shoei, Arai, or Shuberth helmets:

1. The price reflects the currency differences between Japan, Germany and North America right now.
2. You pay for the badge, which covers the racing sponsorships. They spend a fortune in racing.
3. These are very high markup items in dealerships (like 100-200 percent).
4. No one has ever shown that these helmets are safer than a $99 polycarbonate.
5. Taiwan is now the world centre for composites manufacturing, with higher standards and quality than anywhere else in the world, which is why $4000+ carbon fiber bicycle frames are all being made there, branded from all over Europe.

We walked away from the deal.
The guy has a store front...so yes, could be legit...but it's a mom/pop type store front...sketchy.

He wanted a 50% deposit on the helmet...and said it would be "ready for pick-up within 10 business days"...fakes? I dunno.

safer, maybe maybe not... but more comfortable... YES.

last year i walked through royal trying every helmet on without looking at prices just checking the sizes.. when i got to the RF1100 i was sold....then i saw the price...$695 with the graphic i wanted...next helmet is going to be gloss white.

Thanks for mentioning our store. I would like to point out that this deal was not offered by CanadasMotorcycle.ca. We list our lowest possible price directly on the site.
