shock rebuild

My current shock has just about had it... definately need a new one for next season.

Looking into a rebuild as an option. Anyone in the GTA good at building shocks?

Its a Kayaba from a ZX7RR.

Not in the GTA exactly but John Sharrard from Accelerated Technologies was rebuilding a bunch of shocks when I was in his shop last. Give him a dingle and see if he can do yours: 705-657-9490

Not in the GTA either but Mission Cycle in Angus.

Wolfe Worx in Union. Wolfe is excellent with older shocks and decent price.

It would be a lot cheaper to find a good used one.

Just take it apart and find the seals locally.
It's that easy.

Last time I did that I got the seals at Murdraulic. Don't know if they are still in business.

What shock did you rebuild?

Those zx7r shocks are prob nitrogen charged...special equip is required.

An odd aftermarket Italian Marzocchi.
Pretty simple really.

The problem with buying an older shock is that any used shock thats listed have probably done just as many KMs or been around for just as many years as my bike. For a little more money (used shocks arn't always cheap) I'd rather get what is basically a brand new shock that will last several years until I can get my hands on an early model ZX10 Ohlins :) .... or something else that has a sock length of around 145-150.

Yes the ZX7 ones are nitrogen charged. I don't even know what is required to drain and refill the gas! I thought of using air but almost immediately realized that its probably a stupid idea.

i got mine rebuilt with new seals at pro 6
Ever since they gave me the wrong shims for my valves, I've been avoiding them for parts and service.

sixstring, IF that shock is rebuildable (a lot of OEM shocks are not), John Sharrard aka Accelerated Technologies can do it. Brad Clarke aka Compulsion Racing can probably do it, also, and he is more local. That shock is a whole different ball game from the Marzocchi that Low rider is talking about; it's unlikely that you'll find parts at a hydraulics shop for it. BUT ...

What the good suspension tuners will probably tell you is that by the time you finish mucking around with that OEM shock, you will probably have bought yourself a used Ohlins, except that you will not have Ohlins to show for it, it will still just be an OEM shock. A friend of mine went through this with the shock for his 2000 R1 which lost all damping suddenly on a trip down south, and we had this same discussion. Fix or replace ... how long are you planning to keep the bike? "Forever" ... then get the Ohlins and get on with it. That was at around 30,000 km on the odometer IIRC. He still has it, with something like 90,000 km on it, and it still has the Ohlins shock.

I'm definately keeping the bike forever. Its a ZX7RR Homologation special after all :)

Ohlins shocks specifically made for the ZX7R/RR come up once in a blue moon for a retarded sum of money and new first gen ZX10 shocks are around $800. I have a wanted ad out on a few places for a used ZX10 Ohlins shock which is probably the most realistic option. I guess I have all winter to wait for a decent ZX10 Ohlins to pop up but I'd hate to ride another season with a shock that dampens like water :p especially when I've dumped a boat load of cash on the front end... which is partly why I can't pick up a new ZX10 shock in the short run.

a used OEM ZX10 shock with low K will still be in GREAT shape. 2004+ shocks got WAY better

is that a Ohlins R&T front end?

What is the eye to eye distance on your shock? I have some recent year 05+ Kawi rear shocks that I can sell you cheap if any of them will work for you

The box just says FG352. Not sure if its R&T series because I've seen other models that say FGRTxxx. The forks were originally made to fit a 2nd Gen ZX-10R. I opted to go for these instead of the full on superbike front end; heard way too many stories about insane maintenance schedules on the superbike kit!

Eye to eye distance is about 350mm. I know the first gen ZX-10R shock will fit (will be a bit short thou) but I'm not sure if later years will due to the way the resivor is mounted. Are there any other sport bikes with 350mm or longer shocks? Most of the modern bikes I see have pretty tiny units.

I have a 05/06 ZX6R shock, it looks be 340mm though. I had a ZX14 but cant seem to find it at the moment

I just added a fill valve to the reservoir on the end cap on the revalved f4 shock I use on my cbr1100xx |I change the oil and recharge it every 2 or 3 years. Still using the the same seals with about 50,000 km on the shock.. I have a couple other other f4 shocks put away incase I need spare seals. I recharge it with argon cause I have it left over from aluminum welding adventures.
