shock linkeage bolts - quick question

If i reverse my shock linkeage bolt (its common)

will the swing arm and bike drop or no?

should i just leave on the kick stand?

thanks!

If you pull out any of the linkage bolts without supporting the bottom of the bike, it will drop down...Unless your kickstand is actually a center stand, it will not prevent the bike from dropping on its own. It would allow the bike to still drop, and make if fall over to the other side ..You need to support the bottom of the bike from dropping before you remove any shock linkage bolts...

I would use a rear stand on the swingarm, and a jack under the oil pan if you have them

so just rear stand, then i can remove that bolt and reverse it? thanks

the lower 1 bolt of this piece i need to remove...

No not just a rear stand, the rear stand it just to keep the bike from tipping side to side while you have it jacked up somehow...I suggest a jack under then oil pan if you have one....I have a cheapo motorcycle jack from CT that I use for this most times

You have to support the bottom of the bike, either from the oil pan or another solid surface......If you do not as soon as you remove the bolt the bike will drop down until it makes contact with something...Most likely the shock will jam up inside the hole in the swing...if the belly or headers doent touch the ground first

HOLD IT

A swing arm stand on its own still relies on the suspension linkage, including those dogbones, to support the weight of the bike.

You have to use a swing arm stand in combination with some other method of supporting the rear of the bike such that the weight is not carried on the suspension.

I use a pair of tie-down straps between the subframe or passenger peg brackets or some such thing, up to a couple of hooks that I installed in the ceiling supported by a main steel structural beam running the length of my house ...

Lol.

Hope you got there (here) in time!

The only down fall to straps is releasing them (commonly they don't have any kind of ratcheting function when released, just gravity - can be a real problem with heavier bikes); a small come-a-long would be more money, but a little easier/safer on heavier bikes.

I already told him that he needs to support the bottom of the bike along with a rear stand....If the OP and Brian P assumed I said different, then they read my post wrong..

I clearly said
"I would use a rear stand on the swingarm, and a jack under the oil pan if you have them"

not just a rear stand

Sorry about that, No harm or insult meant on my part. I'm a klutz, stands aren't my preference unless I can lock down either the front or rear of the bike to prevent tipping.

Hoists are great if you have them, and have somewhere to mount them too. Its just not a tool most do it yourself types have readily available in most cases...

I have a 2 ton chain hoist that I use sometimes, but I can only use it in the back of my shop where the ceiling is 20ft high and has steel beams I can hook it onto...My main bike working room has a drop down ceiling so I cannot use it there...

When I use a jack I make sure its supported properly, and I only raise it enough to remove the weight from the suspension slightly. This way the bike still sits in the rear stand firmly...

jezuz god thank you all for the quick reply's...disaster averted!

I now have a 140hp (so they say..dyno soon) z1000 with successful zx9 header and a brilliant map....

what a monster this thing is now. It honestly feels 10x better, but its quiter surprisngly, went from 4-2 cut stocks to a carbon D&D 4-1

just need someone with a pipe bender to bend the mid a hair...thankfully i have a half decent shop and hung the exhaust with some stainless sheet.

Did you flip the front linkage bolt because you cant take it out with the exhaust headers on the bike the way Kawi installs it at the factory? I hate that and flip all of mine because of that when I have the chance...
