So ****** off right now at Shell and their moron employees.

I was at the Kingston & Sheppard Shell station, filling up my (nearly empty) tank, and at less than $5 the pump cuts off, no warning. Buddy inside comes over PA saying, "Please sir get off the bike while filling." I tell the guy, I'm already filling the tank, my kickstand is down and I've already preauth'd my card, what's the problem? "Please sir you must get off the bike for safety reasons." I'm too close to the pump to safely do so -- I tell the guy this, he tells me to just leave the pump in my OPEN GAS TANK, and I can get off & move the bike. For safety reasons.

Do these ****ing people have any shred of common sense in them?

I tell the guy how stupid of an idea that is, he again repeats, "Please sir for safety..." I tell him I'm not getting off the bike while I have an open tank with a pump sticking out of it, he refuses to let me continue filling up -- so I put the pump back on the machine to close my tank to move the bike. Of course this ends my transaction and I can't continue filling up after. I spend the next 20 minutes giving the ****tard **** at his service window, explaining to him how stupid of a "policy" this is, demanding he either let me continue filling up or give me his head office number. He does the latter, I call it, and it's the wrong number. Shell's employee help line, who redirect me to the ACTUAL customer service line, which simply gives me a "sorry for the inconvenience, our system is currently down" and hangs up.

All of this because Captain Clueless behind his glass shroud of stupidity somehow believes he's trying to do the safe thing, and as a result I end up leaving and giving my business to a competitor. In 3 years I have NEVER had to get off my bike to fill up. I know it's not the first time it's been asked, and I DO understand why in some cases they're right, but I don't understand where some of these people get their logic from. The guy didn't seem to get how it was actually more dangerous for me to risk dumping gas all over the place if my bike/the pump fell over while I try to juggle everything, where he could have simply left me alone for the 30-60 seconds it would have taken me to fill up... ugh.

/rant.

uhm, I don't get it.
You spent 20 minutes yelling and calling resulting in where you started.
This story would be more interesting if the bike caught fire.

Don't like the rule? Berate the guy that had nothing to do with its creation.

Makes sense.

I don't believe its a rule, It sounds to me like this guys at shell just felt it was safer so he was going to make the OP get off his bike. I have NEVER been asked to get off my bike while fueling up.

I would have just put the pump back on and take my 5$ worth of gas and ride to another station. Not worth the 30 minutes of pointless arguing

But that's me

I can see it. If you tip over now you have a open gas tank Pissing all over the ground.

It's a corporate policy. The poor cashier had nothing to do with it.

I know some people who have real problems, job was outsourced, somebody who has cancer.

If that ruined your day, you got to get new priorities.

Ahhh let him rant. Yes their are people who are dying, yes people have cancer. Yes their is third world hunger. But he wasn't comparing it to that. ;)))
Hell, you guys must not be married, cause I here rants all the time! Unless you have been married for a long time and have mastered the art of ignoring while lookin interested! I'm getting there.

Regardless, I just found this out myself a week ago. First time at a shell. I can understand it for the most part. Think this is bad, see the safety guys we see on site. My god, surprised they don't have a write up and procedure incase hell actually did freeze over. !

Yeah. You should have never ever filled your tank, still sitting on the bike in the first place.
You created the problem yourself.
If any thing, you should be mad at yourself for being such a tard.

The poor employee was trying to edumicate you.

Hmmm more "i know better" and "it's all about me" people... Hang on, yep, still in the GTA... ;)
Why don't you get the Toronto star to run a story. They've picked these type of stories up quite often these days

so a guy that was just following a policy he had no hand in creating, trying to hold onto his minimum wage crap job gets ripped by a guy that doesn't think the rules apply to him.
God help the poor girl that doesn't double cup your camomile tea.

I never knew this was a standard policy of Shell's. I had one shell gas attendant tell me to take my helmet off while filling up and that ****** me off just as much.

Only people I see sitting on their bikes and filling are fat ***** Harley posers. Such a struggle it is to them.......

It's a scream, when my buddies do this, and end up with a burning ring of fire.
Gas in your rectum hurts like a biatch.

Sheppard & Kingston?? Bad area to begin with :D
Try filling up in Woodbridge for once. They couldn't care less if you are doing a burnout while filling up, as long as you pay.

Okay let me ask this question, Say you were happily filling your tank and the employee didn't say anything but as the gas level came to close to the top you let go of the trigger to late. Now you have a little gas running down your fairings and possibly in your crotch. Would you still just sit their like a lazy azz??? Get real Bud. You'd be running for paper towels real quick. Stretch your legs a little and get off the bike next time!!!

I realize there is potential for accidents to happen when sitting on your bike while fuelling, but how do you guys fill your tanks completely if your bike is on its sidestand leaning to one side? That's pretty much the only reason why I fill up while sitting on my bike.

The only 3 times I've EVER filled gas ,I've got off the bike...find it awkward to fill it sitting down anyways..

But in the op's case...after the attendant saw he was forced to put the gas pump handle back in the slot, following his safety rule..maybe...just mayyyybeee he should have allowed him to fill the remaining 2 dollars worth of gas that was left...after all, he did pay for it..
