Service before winter or after winter?

So my ninja 250 is new this summer, and I'm just over 900 km. I will need to get it serviced when it reaches 1000 km but the season is almost over. So I was wondering whether I should get it serviced before I store it for winter or after winter so it's ready to go for next riding season.

Season Almost over? There are still 2+ months before snow?
I'm sure you can put 100km's on it before then.
I commute on my bike and am guessing I'll still put 7,000km on it before I put it away this season :D
 
lol, yes, I know there's actually still a couple more months to ride, however, I can only ride on the weekends so I don't rack up on kms that much atm especially since I'm still looking for riding buddies. But if it's better to start fresh with a new service next year, then I'd purposely ride roughly just under 1000 so I can service it next year. Any more opinions?
 
Do the service before the season ends. If nothing else, you'll have fresh oil sitting in the bike over the winter.
 
My service manual indicates "oil change before winter storage".

If you ride for only another 8 weeks, that would be 12.5kms a week to reach your 1000 service. That is bascially you riding to and from the gas station, I don't know the rides you go on but I can't remember the last ride that was less than 100km. Just ride how much you want to ride, service it at the proper mark and then put it away when it is to cold for you to ride anymore.
 
service before storage, do you want fresh oil or dirty oil in bike over winter...dirty oil has contaminants that love to work on them seals...plus you have less prep time for riding in the spring...pop battery in and ride...unless you change it in the spring too, which i don't do...i just change before putting in storage, takes me less than 3o mins...
 
Do you guys change the filter as well? My manual says to change oil before storing, but then says change oil and filter after storing.

Really, your manual says that? What kind of bike do you have? Generally two oil changes is overkill, you only need to change it once before you put it away.
 
Always change your oil filter whenever you do an oil change, otherwise you are just putting dirty oil thats in the old filter into the new oil.

Basically for storing it says to change oil. Nothing about filter.

Then for returning to service it says:
Drain oil, replace oil filter, pour fresh oil

Thanks for the pictures, I wouldn't have believed it otherwise lol! I still say changing it twice is overkill. Do the oil and filter when you put it away.

I agree that it sounds like a waste.

I bet it just says that because it recommends overfilling and draining back to the correct amount would be a mess. If you go that route you don't run it after filling so there is little if any point to changing the filter before storage. Sounds like a longer term storage setup than we require.
 
1000km service for a new bike is the biggest waste of money.....your pretty much paying $250 for an oil change and a "look over of the bike, to ensure all nuts and bolts are tighten to factory specs." Do the winter maintenance yourself and store the bike...
 
Good advice so far.Only thing i can add is this.DO NOT go out and start it now and then.Once it is stored,leave it that way.
