Security licence & PI licence

Does anyone know about how to obtain one?
I thought it was just a test you took at a ministry office.
Now I am hearing you have to have some sort of training program before you even go for the test? Is this true ?
Where do you go for testing and how much does it cost? How long is the course? What sort of things do they teach you?

If anyone knows or can provide HELPFUL advise, that would be great!

Basically everyone I know including myself had the course provided to them by their employer. Our employer sent us to write the test as well. I will say the most positive thing has been the pay increase and the opportunity for work. Well at least when it comes to security in the bar. I now make easily 3 times the amount I used to get paid per hour and could pretty much work 7 days a week if i felt like it.

Thanks. Unfortunately I will be "self employed" therefore I have to look into paying for it myself.

Anyone else have to go through this without a company paying for it?

Well a 10 minute google search would've answered all your questions, but this is a forum after all.

You need a 40 hour licensing course, it's dull and boring **** for 4 days, then the 5th day is First Aid/CPR. Costs between 250 and 500 depending where you go. My company (Paragon) offers one of the best courses out there, and you do get partially reimbursed if you go on to work for them for X amount of hours.

After passing that, you pay $80 for a S/G license or $160 for a dual license if you took the PI course.

If you pass that, you're now licensed for 2 years and must renew for a fee every 2 years.

Thanks for the info. Minus the sauciness. Just thought I could get first hand info off someone here if they had their licence, rather then google.

Pretty much what I need to find out are there legitimate companies that offer the licence course ?
Now that this is a mandatory course by the govt , I'm sure many companies are trying to cash in on it.
Where would I find a list of companies that provide the course but are PSIAS certified?
Can you also do the course part-time (classes after work) as I do have a full time job.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry for the snarkiness, I'm on way too many forums it seems...anyways

Don't be afraid to drill companies that offer online or part time courses. It seems in the last couple years Security companies have been cropping up left right and centre. There are a few out there that I can vouch for that are great companies to work for and legit, with great sites and contracts. Some of the bigger ones (G4S, Intercon) are going down the tubes and should be avoided. If you do end up getting into the industry feel free to PM me with questions. I've bounced around from 3 of the bigger employers in the GTA in the last couple years and (somehow) have ended up very well connected. My parents and some friends are also involved in Property Management and deal with these companies on a regular basis at the corporate level.

I have been a Security Guard for 2+ years. It's ok. I haven't found a company I like yet. If anyone has any recommendations on good companies that would be great.
