I'm just about to button up the cases on my 76 Honda 750 sohc 4. It's been more than decade since I did this last.
What's your favorite sealant for this task?
Any application tips would also be welcome.

Hondabond is the sealant I have always seen recommended for any engine job.

Threebond 1102 or 1121 at Winner's Circle
Yamabond, Hondabond, Suzukibond from dealers

... are mostly all the same stuff.
I use Threebond 1121 cuz it comes in a larger, cheaper tube and won't effect rubber, so you can use it with gaskets
You want a non drying RTV silicone SEALANT
Permatex and Loctite make something similar

Having clean, flat sealing surfaces is more important that what product you use to seal them

Thanks all.

I was reading the label on some Permatex (didn't buy it) and noted that after applying the sealant you are to finger tight the bolts and then let it sit an hour before torquing the bolts. Is this standard?
I would be afraid of getting a thick area that would then not squish down fully.

It stays squishy for a long time. It is a rubber-like adhesive, will never completely harden. Do not overdo it. Just paint on enough to do the job. It soaks into the gasket, then when you torque it down the gasket squishes and seals tightly.

This is actually between cases with no gasket, but I'm sure that still applies.

I've used Threebond 1211 with no problems. I researched beforehand and found this technique for application, which I've used a few times since with zero issues:

So after an indy auto parts, NAPA Ideal Supply and crappy tire I came up empty handed. The NAPA guy spent like 15 minutes on his terminal and couldn't find Loctite 518. He found what he thought was similar but it was the caulking gun sized tubes.

Any suggestions for a supplier?

Brafasco or Bolts Plus carry 518. But usually only in the $90 caulking gun size.
A little bit goes a long way. And take as long as you want applying it. It won't dry until the surfaces are mated.
