Scrapping a vehicle across the border

If the vehicle used to travel across the border becomes disabled, and the repair or the towing costs are greater that the vehicle's value, is it permitted to scrap it locally and if it is are there any complications (like import duties, etc.)?

I will put it to you this way. Every time I have asked a US customs official about how to import a vehicle I get a different answer. After a whole lot of problems when I was living in the US with a Canadian bought car, going to the import office and them asking for documents that were not being given out by the DOT anymore, I just went to a little hillby billy town and got my US title without even importing the car. 2 other Canadians working at the same place imported their cars in completely different ways.

Point is they probably don't even know the answer to that question. I think if you did it... no one would ever find out.... or know the correct answer anyway.

I had a friend that did this at least 3 times. He would drive POS cars and when they died, sign the ownership and leave the ownership and keys on the seat at the side of the road. Whoever picked it up got the car, then he'd buy a new POS car, throw his plates on it and keep going. This was a few years ago, things must have been easier then because there was no way he was getting official recall letters on 15 yo toyota corollas or hyundai ponys to cross back into Canada. AFAIK at the border it was just one crap car in one crap car out, have a nice day.
