Hi

I know someone who wants to sell his scooter, which is piaggio fly 150, 2006 with 5000km on it. He told me that, its basically, a Vespa with plastic body. It doesnt go faster than 80km, I am ok with that.

Would you share you opinion on it.
Is it good scooter?
how about parts, is it easy to order than.
would you suggest a different scooter?

I also like Yamaha BWS 125, but its a bit pricey.

Thanks

Might be best to check out some dedicated scooter forums and as there as well. There are guys who ride scooters here, but it is predominantly motorcycles. I am sure a google search will bring up Ontario scooter forums.

Seems slow! TMSC is a Toronto meetup site, lots of members. Personally I would look at the BW's (Zuma).

My wife had a Piaggio Fly 150 for a couple of years. 2008 model I think. They changed manufacturing from Italy to China in 2006 or 2007 I believe. Yes, Piaggio is the overall manufacturer, which includes the Vespa brand.

It's classed as a motorcycle, so you'll need an M1/M2/M license. Top speed was about 100km/hr - maybe 110km/hr downhill or drafting a van. I did ride this on the DVP a couple of times during rush hour when speeds were slow. Much better on side streets, but acceleration is very slow compared to other vehicles.

I didn't have to order parts. You can easily find a .pdf of the service manual online.

Being light, they're easy to steal, although the key is chipped.

Before you make any decision, call around for insurance quotes. There will be little price difference between the Piaggio Fly 150 and a Honda CBR125/250. Insurance might be more expensive than the bike itself, especially if you have no motorcycle license currently.

I recently bought the same scooter, a 2006 Piaggio Fly 150 several weeks ago. I use it mostly to get to work, but on the weekends I have taken it out through Halton and one longer trip to Elora. Overall it's alright, you'll beat (most) cars off the line in the city, but it lacks passing power at speed. Max speed on mine is about 95kmh, and as FLSTC said it should be getting to 100. Something is wrong with the one you're looking at if it only does 80. I do enjoy how light and nimble it is even at speed compared to my heavy old cruiser that was only good at going straight.

They're right about it being a plastic Vespa, 2006 was the last year Piaggio's were made in Italy, they use the same engine parts as the Vespa LX150. Non-generic parts pretty much have to be shipped from the US, but they're fairly cheap. The service manual can be found online and there are YouTube videos of people doing maintenance.

The Yamaha Zuma (BWS) 125 would be a bit slower (maybe 80-85km), but they have fatter tires and they're designed so if they fall over nothing breaks. I had a Zuma 50 which I wish I had been able to keep (lack of space) to go off-roading.

Wear gear, I see too many fellow scooterist's with nothing on but a half-helmet with t-shirt and flip-flops. You're at just as much risk as a motorcyclist.

I'm seeing a lot of Piaggio mp3s near me right now. Pretty cool looking scooters for a 3 wheeler.

I have a BW125 and I like it and would say get that instead.

I can do about 90-95kph on it flat out ... and about 105kph downhill ... and about 85kph up hill... this is pushing my 240 lbs *** around on it.

I have taken it on the 400 north bound and regularly rode it on the 427 north and south bound headed to the GO station for 1 summer when I lived in the da'bridge

Thanks for the all the reply.

Recently renewed my M2 and its good for another 5years.
I like it very much also. The price is great. It has only 5000km. Asking $1100, with certification. New tires, breaks and oil changes.
