Scooter people within us all, where art thou?

Becoming a proud owner of 2 wonderous 2 stroke scooters, one Nov 2019, the next two months later, has brought my mind to a ponderous state.

Where do those other two wheeled fledglings so humbly reside?

Of the scooter forums I've come across, more have returned with an unmaintained server host than not. It leads me closer to thinking that the gas scooter community is dying, being tactfully taken over by those ebikes so common and so currently hated by me, though likely what I'll own in a couple years time.

Groms and z125s are a high density of fun and Toronto Grom Squad is a loving group of hooligans, though they fail to mimic the cheap entry and insurance cost of a legs in front, mechanically primitive 50cc 2t.

Yes, they disproportionately contribute to green house emissions.

But bigborekits and engine components are fractions the price of a decent exhaust on any full sized sportbike and offer a simple platform to become familiar with mechanics on compared to any i4 bike.

It's a hard swallow as a sole method of 2 wheeled satisfaction, though as a second bike, scooters are a perfect complement in the garage.

Everyone ought to have one. If not a 50cc 2t, a gy6, if not that, a Grom or z, something inconspicuous that makes cagers warmly ask questions and dismiss any of the craziness one may enact. cuz hey, it doesn't look serious enough to need a license, and hey it just looks like the rider's acting like a kid, living their adult dreams.

That said, where my scooter peeps and proponents at?

My babies, a 2005 derbi Atlantis 50cc 2t jetted with pipe and a 2003 Yamaha Zuma 50cc 2t with malossi 70cc big bore, leo Vince pipe, fender delete, dual headlight mod, oil injector delete and hell's worth of fairing damage.

Derbi goes tops about 70kmph on 12in wheels with my 250lbs on er, Zuma tops 90 on 10in under same circumstances 20200405_002940.jpg20200405_002909.jpg

Scoot on. Any two wheels are good.

Kid started on a woeful Jaz then a very fun BW that still holds its own.

I had the 1985 Elite 150, 2007 Kymco Super 9 Lc in red, Another 2007 Super 9Lc in blue, a yellow Ruckus 50 for a bit. now a 2009 Piaggio 150 that needs help. Always had a bike as well. I have been offered a couple of 1980s Vespas 50 and 125 but far and hard to pull the trigger at this time.

First two Mad Bastered runs the elite then the red Super. Modern Vespa is very bust forum. Scoottoronto was busy until this started. Scoottoronto.com | From scooter classics to modern plastics, Scoottoronto does it all.

If you want a 1999 ish Derbi Predator 50cc liquid cooled 2t parts bike. Have one. No ownership From Quebec

One of these has always been on the radar. Never pulled the trigger though.

I've always liked the aprilias, if not for the power then for their looks. Extends to the tuono and their euro supermoto line.

A shame larger 2 strokes have been out of production for so long already. My dream is a 100cc 2t aerox or Aprilia someday

I want a burgman 650! (maybe 400?) Can't have 2 bikes though so will stick to the cb5x for now.. Haven't had a chance to sit on one so I'm not sure how the comfort will be for my taller frame.. But definitely think it'll be more comfortable for the wife!

I just cant see myself spending $6000 on something that is slow as dirt.

Not all scoots are slow....and a maxi-scoot will set you back $15k.

You perhaps may not want to take on one of these

But the day of maxi-scoot is drawing to a close with EVs on the horizon.
The King is gone, and the Aprilla above. Oddly BMW - after being late to the party, is still in it.

Honda stays in with the "no slouch" 745cc Integra and X-ADV

I'm not saying all scoots are slow, I'm saying that 125cc honda will be slow. If I wanted two wheels for commuting, it's hard to beat a bergmann.

Scoottoronto.com is a bit of a weird blog/publication thing - It's basically a one man show for the most part and how active things are in coming up with new articles can depend on time after the needs of the day job. (my work isn't one that is shut down.) So with the whole COVID-19 thing, things have been a bit quiet.

That being said - I've noticed for Canada at least, online scooter forums seem to be on the quiet side the last little while. Maybe some of that is the ebb and flow that happens with scooters and low gas prices - less sell, less new scooterists, etc. Might just be the smaller Canadian market - a few online voices going quiet due to life distractions has a bigger impact on us.

Still, I suspect things will get busier again - though likely not this summer for obvious reasons.
