Scooter or Ninja 250 for 20 year old?

Hello everyone, I am new to the world of motorcycles and the insurance premiums are the biggest factor in me deciding what to ride. I am 20, live in Thornhill, and have had my G for almost 4 years now. I am going to go write my M1 tomorrow and do the beginner's course sometime soon to get my M2. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the cheapest ride to insure would be? Should I get a scooter (and what kind for that matter, as I have no idea about scooters) or would a ninja 250 be close in insurance costs? Any advice is appreciated :)

I would recommend that you wait a year before you buy anything. Your rate will much more affordable then.

Agreed, wait a season with your M2 under your belt. I was going to do that but came across the money to get a bike and insure it,but I am 25 and have had my G for over 5 years..congrats on riding and good luck in whatever you choose to get

Thanks guys. My plan was to wait until at least next season to get anything but it looks like I'll definitely wait at least a year after getting the M2. I've waited since I was 16 so one more year can't be that bad ;)

Cheapest ride to insure would be an e-bike, no insurance necessary.

I already built my own ebike, top speed is about 50 km/h and it is stealthy so no cops ask questions  I might just buy some motorcycle or dirt-bike safety gear for now and power up my ebike to get more acceleration and speed until I buy a bike. And just for the record, I'm not one of those annoying bikes who cut all over the place. I actually follow traffic rules and if I ever go on the sidewalk then I bike walking speed.

Ride safe guys!

Wait one full years after obtaining your M1 and your Jevco quote will drop by nearly 40%.

For insurance, the scooter will be cheaper but it isn't as versatile (i.e. you can't ride highways). I would suggest going with a Ninja 250 over the scooter. Call a Jevco broker and get a quote on each vehicle so that you can compare the premiums.

So even though the M1 expires after 90 days, as long as I wrote and passed the test 1 year before then the insurance will drop?

It will drop one year after obtaining your M1 provided that you obtain your M2 before it expires. To be clear, you can't write your M1, wait two years, rewrite your M1, obtain your M2, and expect a discounted rate.

if you have 3600 for insurance and about 4200 for a ninja 250 then go or it.
So yeah wait a year.

Register for a rider's course now. RTI for example. They have different motorcycles bikes to ride. After a weekend of seat time, you mind find something that fits your taste. You'll have your M2 this year and it's good for 5 years.

The spring brings higher list prices but, do some research, look what catches your eye and be patient. Get some insurance quotes before pulling the trigger on either a scooter or bike.

Good luck.
