Got a good scare last night, made sure to come home and hug the family....
Took the scenic way home last night, couple 90 degree switchbacks to practice my riding as I've been off the bikes for a few years. Just on the home stretch of my 30km commute. I pull out on the 35/115 hwy south bound ( between hwy 401 and Peterborough ) and start my final 2km to home. I merge into traffic, and kept the modest pace of the traffic. I get about a km along the highway and "it" happens.....just out of a slow mo clip from a movie....
coming through the air, end over end at me is a tri-axle dump truck....yes a dump truck.
The north bound dump truck had hit the center concrete divider and gone airborne, end over end, over the divider and landed in the south bound lanes. I had a mini van just in front of me and we were able to get on the binders just time to avoid the collision. We literally stopped within 50 ft of the truck. We looked to our left and the complete front axle and wheel assembly were lying in ditch. Just beyond the truck the road was littered with chunks of concrete, some as big as basketballs. Got me thinking what a single "second" of time meant....
Parked bike and went to check on driver, disoriented but conscious and no obvious signs of trauma. Off duty paramedic was right up on scene.Truck was across 1.5 of the 2 lanes on it's passenger side.
Reality checks suck.
