Save the world

OK. If given the choice I will do what is less damaging to the planet we inhabit. I contribute to global warming because I ride a bike and eat meat but my occupation has offset that IMO. I fix things so big factories don't have to use massive quantities of materials and energy to build new stuff.

However every once in a while I get a petition request for some save-the-world cause of which I am completely ignorant. It's too easy to simply agree with every nutbar with an ax to grind. It's also easy to ignore real problems.

Making a wise decision means studying very complex issues and that would take a lifetime of study per petition request.

Theoretically we should be able to trust our politicians, civil servants and business leaders to make ethical decisions but due to recent events I have more faith in the nutbars.

Is there an honest "Cole's Notes" one can turn to for advice?

I'm not exactly sure what you're after but I know I'm joining the ranks of the nutbars because, quite frankly, it seems people in power and influence serve so many agendas and masters that they have to lie as a matter of course. Last night I watched a food industry/sugar doc on TVO which is putting the last nail in the coffin for me. Heart healthy food labelling can be bought despite the food contained not meeting the criteria. On and on it goes.....

I'm with you.

I read somewhere that a decent donation will get a decent recommendation from a recognized organization for a food product of questionable value.

Low fat often means high sugar and vice versa or more chemicals than an oil refinery.

The "Food Inc." documentary is an eye opener as well. In the land of the free you aren't allowed to take a picture of a feed lot. Cows have more privacy rights than people, not that they're trying to protect the cows, just their owner / abusers.

My immediate "Save the World" petition is about bee colony collapse supposedly due to insecticides that kill insects by disorienting them. One big culprit is apparently the corn farmers, a group heavily tied into the ethanol market.

Talk to a natural bee keeper and you'll find that the bee / honey market is as corrupt as most other markets.
