Salt/Brine Question.

Does anyone know if there is an official schedule from the city for when they stop brining/salting the roads?

Not sure if the province or city salts the 400 series around town either, but if there is a day, I'd like to be on the road the day after the next rain. :)

March 17th.

There is no set day they won't salt after. When it is not needed it is stopped.
Just watch the weather and the roads and get out there as soon as you feel comfortable.

in toronto at least, it seems if there is a hint of snow "well oh gosh we better do a full salt".
seems to me like make work projects, to get the plow guys away from playing cards all day.

realistically, we have only needed the salters a few times. So why are they out there all the time?? wasteful...

interesting googling: http://www.google.ca/search?q=toron...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
"using salt wisely" ya...wisely...

not cool toronto, not cool!

A few good rainstorms and no more freeze/thaw temps is what I go by.

My workplace looks like this. I work for a municipal government so wherever people are likely to step they dump shovels of salt to prevent any possible liabilities. The areas around doors and walkways are now pure white from all the salt.

Becasue if they dont, the snowplow operators will be accused of sitting around during the snowstorm and then some driver who slid into the ditch and will start a civil action against the city, the snowplow operator and the company, the road designer, the autombile company, and the all season tire manufacturer.....all because there was 1 cm of snow on the ground and no one was out salting and plowing.

anyone see salters out today for that "snow-maggesddon" we had?

i will draw blood if there was...

it was quite bad up north....Toronto didnt get the snow /freezing rain advisory

I wish there was lots of salt on the apartment steps my dad was exiting from when he slipped and broke his ankle, and then had to wait 45 minutes before someone called an ambulance and then finally got to him. Even the tens of thousands of dollars he received from the insurance claim wasn't worth the pain and agony and permanent injury he has to deal with...

There's a reason they over-salt, and I think it's a good reason.

have you noticed the water after a rain looks like dishwater? bubbles? .. I was told they are mixing stuff like beet juice, or asparagus,, with brine, and water, and adding dishsoap to make it spread out.. companies that do rustproofing have all sorts of literature "proving" how bad the liquid spray is. a few years ago, the search came up with different approaches to making the new brine .. but I can't seem to find it now .. don't worry about the salt... just the sand in the corners! ride today , like you might not have a tomorrow.

are you kidding??? were talking about roads here...different vehicles that dump the **** and probably different departments knowing toronto.
sorry to hear about your dad, but go away

there is no need for the over excessive salt we get in toronto. its just to keep the plow people employed. we could chop half of them and still have adequate salting services when needed.

which this year was maybe 5 times...seeing them salt when the weather hovers around 0 in the morning and is going up to 5 is unnecessary. they should go back to the base and play cards like they do most of the days...

Well I'll chim in.

I'll explain why we contractors salt on every snow event...I'm in kw so its a little colder and we avg more snow.
Every year I get notice of a slip and fall. 99% of the time its some ******* trying to get easy money. If you ever see me in lot parking filling out paperwork its because we document EVERY GOD DAM DETAIL because someone is going to call the property manager and say why isn't the complex salted or claim we didn't weeks later and make something up. **** sakes I get emails from one mananger at 7am sometimes asking why my crew hasn't been thru one of the complexes yet...the kicker is it just started to snow at 6am! We have more then one site and 8hr window to get it done.
I'm currently being sued right now for a bogus claim that a lady slipped and fell and hurt her back. Well at the time of her fall, there was no snow or ice on the pavement ..(we do site checks simply because of this and always have...god 1cm and ppl freak out. my employee had been on site to check and there was no snow or ice). Makes sense doesn't it? My ins co dissmissed her claim and now shes hired a lawyer and suing me. Five years ago someone faked a back injury at a Canadian Tire I did and went in made a scene, got the manager to dish out $500 on the basis he'd not sue..
Anyone who thinks snow and ice management is easy money do yourself a favour and buy a contractor a coffee and ask him about it.

I agree some sites are over salted...we only salt what is required and there is a program called "smart about salt" run by the region of waterloo (I've taken it) which is a good program. Contractors can become certified (im in the process) and its slowly being recognized by insurance companies...which is key because they're the ones who got your back when a claim is filed

As for when to ride, salt brine is activated by mositure and with the spring thaw the last thing you want to do is ride on a road when its "sweating". You'll have rust in a heart beat. Wait for a few good rains.

Sorry about the rant....
