Hi,

Hitch is showing signs of rusting...can anyone recommend an effective spray or substance that is easily accessible (crappytire).

Sandblasting/sanding is also an option but may get a little messier and more pricey

Rust Chek rust converter. I used in on my Jeep hitch. Get the bottle instead of the spray and brush it on. Remove the flaky stuff first with a wire brush.

Yep i love this stuff.

Shewie, where do you get naval jelly in canada anymore?

Good question. I have some that I bought at Home Hardware about 15 years ago (I use it so very often, lol), but after I put that reply up I started thinking that I don't remember seeing it in there last time I was in. My BIL owns a few HHs, I'll ask him if it is still available. Perhaps it has been removed from the shelves by Nanny to protect us from ourselves.

if you have a ton of time and patience....wire brush, sanding and undercoating or rocker guard spray.

I was experimenting with white vinegar. I got some small rusty car fender pieces and soaked them in the vinegar for about two days. Then I pressure sprayed them and they were bare clean steel. Can the parts be immersed in a reasonable quantity of vinegar?

I found a picture of the test with the vinegar soak FWIW

The piece of metal was partly immersed twice as the "L" shape indicates. It was all the same rusty brown to start.

Naval Jelly is still available at Home Hardware.

Put some epoxy primer on the bare metal, after you clean the rust off.

I have used pickling vinegar with 7 or 8% acid inside of rusty tanks before. Does the job.

White vinegar, salt and lemon juice concoction....strips rust off like nuts.

Larger parts people have setup "showers" where the part sits in a tub and the fluid is pumped up and showered on the part, after a day it looks brand new.

Google the ingredient ratios....

I used it on rusted bolts and parts on my Land Rover and it worked great.

Just use baking soda and water mix after to neutralize the acid.

After the parts were done, i used the solution to pickle some eggs and make some salad dressing. Win Win. :D

If you don't really care use a paint rush & apply some used motor oil
