Rust Proofing A Bike?

Just wondering what some of the winter riders do to protect all those nice metal bits when faced with the odd briney day or two?

I usually wash the bike once a week and liberally apply a a coating of silicone.

Another biker turned me on to Krown Royal rust proofing in a can....any one have any experience with this or other winter riding rust proofing techniques?

I also gave Jigeloo a try (from CT) and man was that a mistake!!!! It etched and bubbled away at almost every clear pastic and even some matte black plastics!!! Stay they hell away from that stuff!!!! I spent the last weekend restoring my dash windscreen and turn signals with the 3M headlight restoration kit (top notch stuff by the way)!!!!

Wash bike frequently, and wax the bike thoroughtly before it gets frozen out there. You'll find grime comes off easier of the whole bike is well waxed (and this includes rims, metals etc).

Good chain lube and chain cleaner as well is a MUST.

Never once washed my old V45, and I rode it through the entire winter. Snow/slush storms and all, at temps as low as -20c. What came of that? 2-3 tiny rust spots that were easily touched up.

I use ACF50. Safe for all plastics, metals, rubbers, etc. Or at least that's what they advertise and I've never had a problem with it. You can even spray it into your electrical connections to protect them. You can buy it from EB Peerless north of Pearson or I can sell you a larger bottle. I buy it by the case and use it on my car.

I just spray it on everything except the brakes and tires and obviously not on things that won't rust (ie plastics, grips, etc). I ride in the winter and haven't seen any rust beyond what I noticed when the bike was almost new.

A member on this forum did a test between a few different products and the ACF50 came out on top. I really should find that thread again as it keeps coming up every winter.

Scottoiler FS365 has received rave reviews. I use it on my bike... can't really comment on it other than no rust so far. It's made for additive layering, too.. so just keep spraying it on, and it'll keep neutralizing the salt apparently.

Works on pipes too, eh? (Going from the pics.) I've never actually thought to use the ACF on my pipes assuming it would just burn off. I should try it. I know my car sure stinks for awhile when I get it all over the exhaust when I under spray it.

Yup, it goes on my pipes too. I remember seeing a review where one set of headers didn't get sprayed, and one did. It was a pretty noticeable difference.

But yea, the bike sure smells funny when it burns off the excess, and it makes a blueish purple smoke :D

Last week i rode in the rain and forgot to lube the chain afterwards.. until last night. I saw spots of orange rust on the O top (not the sides) of the chain and panicked. I just started to spray dupon teflon mutli-use chain saver on it and the rust washed off. Just wondering is it safe to say the chain's okay? Or did i mess up and i now need a new chain :S Sorry for high jacking the thread a little!

The chain is fine. Even if the rust didn't come off it would be fine. I don't lube after every rain ride. I've had a bit of surface rust. If the chain has stiff spots or exceeds the stretch as shown in your manual, you should replace it.

ahh okay thanks!

Got my hands on some ACF-50 and oiled the bike up something fierce. It almost got a bit naughty!

Anyways, the bike looks like a glistening oiled up body builder under stage lights now and I am deeply impressed with the thickness of the oil. Not too thin to wear off easily like silicone and clearly does what it says on the can...."it keeps creeping".

A spot of this stuff just keeps expanding and illustrates how it creeps into tight spaces.

Be warned, dont get any on your rotors or tires. I had to ride around for 10 mins pumping the brakes to get them de-slicked and working again! Silicone on the rotors only takes maybe 7 or so brakes to get it off the rotors, while this stuff takes much more effort.

Where'd you get it from, if you don't mind me asking?

The distributer ships or sells it from his home in mid Etobicoke, near the airport.

I popped by and picked up and can and he tossed in some grease samples too!

Check the website > Canadian distributors > email....or click this...spasternak@corrosionauthority.com. His name is Steve.

Oh I get it from him but he's only ever agreed to sell me a whole case. He delivered it for free in person last time I bought a case. I have to go to EB Peerless for individual bottles and they only have the medium sized aerosol cans. Does he sell individual bottles from home now?

He sold me a tall aerosol can about 10" high for $19 + tossed in 6 samples.

I guess maybe I won't need to buy a whole case then when I need more. We'll see. Thanks for the info.

He gave me a few free samples when I bought the case last time as well. I don't think I ever used them, though.
