Rugby World Cup 2011

England squeaked past Argentina this morning, Canada's first game is on the 14th against Tonga.
 
Does basic cable get TSN? They were showing the re-runs (commercial free) of the Japan/France and England/Argentina earlier this afternoon.

Is England still just kicking the ball all the damn time like a bunch of pussies? I'm english and usually cheer for the All Blacks as they at least run with the damn thing.

I wouldn't say I was too surprised, they have beaten Tonga before, but what did surprise, was the come from behind effort they put forth. Those boys were ready to run through a brick wall to win that match.

pleasant surprise win for Canada. Well, pleasant surprise how they came back. Hope they can make it to the next round. Tough teams in NZ and France ahead though.
 
Yeh but you never know which team are going to turn up for France, could be either brilliant or crap. Former and NZ could be in trouble, latter and Canada could be in q-finals!
 
Awesome game by Canada beating the Tongan boys. Not to take anything away from us Canucks but I think part of it is that Tonga didn't respect our team enough to play their best possible side. They were saving some guys (to avoid injury) for later in the tournament while Canada's plan is to go balls out everytime.

I can't stand watching England. They are the most boring team in the world. Technical - yes. Can win - yes. Style - no. They just don't have pizzazz like the kiwi's do.

Stupid strategy on their part. Only 2 teams move on. Now they have 2 losses. It'll be hard for them to get through.

Another thing. The concept of bonus points is stupid. A win should be a win and that's that. Same with a loss. What's even more stupid is that if a game ends in a tie, one team can be awarded more points than the other.

Bonus points help in tie break situations and help to keep teams fighting for that extra point even during a loss. If you keep the game close you could get the bonus point, so there is always incentive to stay competitive.


One thing I truly respect about the Canadian Rugby program (and get frustrated with at the same time) is that we are pretty much throwing amateurs into a tournament of professionals. All those Tongan's for example, play professional rugby somewhere, and our boys are mostly regular joe's who have to train on the side while still trying to make a living. It wasn't until recently that Canadians started getting a look by other clubs/teams overseas and given the opportunity to play.
 
So long as they keep 3rd place, it'll help push Rugby Canada forward and prepare better for the next campaign, with much needed funding and publicity. Sponsors have already signed on for extended 2-3 year contracts, just from the way the guys have been playing at this world cup.

Unless something ridiculous happens and Tonga beats France with a Bonus pt, we're ok.
