RTI M2X Course, Test without highway portion

Hey guys, a friend is looking to upgrade to an M license and found this M2X course/test option on the RTI website that basically just omits the highway portion of the test, if you ride a 100-250cc motorcycle. No, this is not the ML ("limited") license, this is the full M.

I thought a big requirement of graduating to an M license was being able to ride on the 400 series highways in the GTA. It's odd that this can be skipped.

Has anyone opted for this course and thoughts ?


Who is it for?
For M2 class riders who wish to obtain an M licence and a potential insurance discount.
“100cc-250cc” version is also available for M2 class riders who own a motorcycle/scooter between 100cc and 250cc that cannot reach highway speeds in excess of 80km/hr.

That's interesting...my girlfriends m2 is going to expire in September, and she doesn't want to go for her M because she won't drive let alone ride on the highway. She's an excellent rider, has no problems on the backroads or city but just doesn't like the highway.

Problem is she sold her 250 and I'm wondering if they would let her do it on my 300, seeing as not many 250s left on the market (new) and most have gone to 300 and up as an entry level bike.

EDIT :

Just called them, no exceptions, must be under 250cc and can't "reach or maintain speed of 100kmh safely" . They're pretty booked up, too...next available time is mid August.

Now to find her a 250 to do this on...

Ya they won't have an issue with her using your bike. I had a friend do this with a buddies bike as he didn't have a bike at the time his M2 was going to expire. You will need to be there with her if shes using your bike and show the instructor your registration, insurance, and drivers licence, just so they know you authorize her to use your bike for the test. I think it is pretty common and they won't hassle either of you (maybe unless your in Brampton LOL!)

Could you please let me know if they let her do the course on the 300 ? My friend also has a 300 and has the same problem. He doesn't plan on ever riding on the highway, and is comfortable on the inner roads.

I think he's suggesting to use the 300 for the course that omits the highway portion. You need a 100-250cc bike to take that course/test.
 
I edited my post because I called and no exception, must be under 250cc. You can rent a 250 but I'm weary of a rental bike, I would borrow one from someone but I don't trust rentals.

a CBR125R will hit 120km/h no problem, top speed is somewhere in the 140-150 range. Unless you own some old vintage bike or a Grom this will probably disqualify you from the highwayless option.

I believe the only reliable rental option is with GTA exotics. But their weekend rental costs north of $450. And this course is only offered on the weekends.
 
When I did my M2 exit with RTI the instructor was actually riding a CB250...and yes of course we went on the Hwy ;)

I saw them, pricey for sure. There's a few rentals on Kijiji, but yeah they're on Kijiji...

For that money, I'd rather buy something for 1000-1500, use it for the test then sell it for what I bought it for. Would be cheaper overall.

Yeah that's what my friend is planing to do now lol. I wonder if 125cc is a safe bet ? But event those can hit 100+.
 
I think the better question is why are there so many people so scared of the highway they'll will go to great lengths to get around it on the M2X? Statistically you're safer on the highway than the side streets. IMO you don't have any business getting a full license.

I agree. Have been arguing about the same with my buddies. I was surprised that they even have an option that omits the highway.

We need to be all inclusive in Canaderp no matter how stupid that is. Honestly, driving isn't that hard and the bar for licensing is very low at the best of times. If driving on the highway exceeds your personal limits, I would argue that you should not be ^*(&^(*&^(*^ driving at all.

I've always maintained that the drive test should be conducted at the center closest to your postal code. I personally know so many people who went to smaller towns 100s of km away to do the test. You should do the test where you intend to drive or ride, simple.

It's unfortunate that there are many shortcuts to this process, and nothing to stop one from abusing them. Nothing you or I can do about it sadly. It's the reason for sh!tty drivers in the GTA.

I've had numerous debates about this with several of my friends. It didn't lead anywhere. Only made me look like a d-bag infront of them.

I'm not going to disagree, I do believe you should be able to ride at highway speeds however I can see why people, especially with small displacement bikes, don't want to.

Some people are perfectly content with just cruising around town or country roads where they will never reach those speeds, so I can appreciate why they don't want to do their test on the highway.

Size of the bike makes a difference, too...at 140ish on my 300 I don't feel totally safe, it's light and feels like it gets blown around but on my vfr I barely feel it at the same speed, it's comfy and stable.

The only problem I have with it is if the person who gets an M without the highway experience or test decides to get on the highway at some point. I would be concerned that they aren't ready or able to handle the speed.

Or accidentally makes a wrong turn and ends up on the highway ...
It's one thing not wanting to ride on the highway, but should the situation arise that you have to, then everyone else along with the rider is screwed if they're not ready.
 
Time was when you could take a motorcycle test and not even go on a public road, they had a little miniature test track complete with undersized lanes and traffic lights, merge lanes, the whole bit, and you did your test on the closed course where you didn't even reach a normal speed limit. They used the same course for public transit bus driver testing and it was a complete joke when you had a bus and a bike on the same course at the same time, lol the busses took up 2 lanes.

Times have changed but they still don't make you ride over anything as big as a curb.
 
If I was in your shoes, I wouldn't be trying to find a 250 or other little bike so she can do the non-highway M2 exit course, rather I'd be trying to help her get over her fears and be able to manage highway traffic. Be a wingman for her on some slow times. The help with skills and confidence there may save her bacon one day in the city.
