Looking for some advice from the experts!

I am looking for a newb friendly route to take from downtown Toronto to Perth. I am getting used to the Bayview extension and plan to start driving on the DVP so I hope to be more highway ready when I make this trip.

Any suggestions for a good route would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure about your best bet for getting out of T.O. but, there are some beautiful roads around Perth. Highway 7 is straightforward and no real challenges for a newer rider. You need to be aware that everyplace there's a passing lane there's OPP though.

If you want to add some more fun riding, as you get around Sharbot Lake take a road southwards to Westport, then wander east then north into Perth. Or, just west of Sharbot Lake take #509 north and loop around some fine roads then come south to Perth.

I plan to go in a few weeks. Mid or late July on a weekend.

Doesn't the 511 run right through it?

I know the road just east of sharbot lake you are talking about to westport (gf dad lives in Newboro). That is a nice road, just have to watch for all the sand early in the season but with the rain we've had it should be good by now.

did this drive a few weeks ago.. well to ottawa, but i passed through Perth on the way.

I took kingston rd/highway 2 to whitby(ish). I went to Garden, then cut over to taunton and took that to highway 115. Highway 115 merges with highway 7 around peterborough. 7 takes you all the way to Perth. The drive is nice and so's the scenery. You could also do DVP, to 401, to 115, take that to highway 7. Might save you 45 minutes.

Do not get on 7 anywhere around the GTA.. around Whitby highway 7 makes a northern detour around lake scugogg which will add a solid 60-90 minutes of driving time.

Highway 7 is a much nicer ride then the 401/416.

oh... and wear earplugs!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Taking one of Evan's suggestions. DVP, to 401, to 115, highway 7. Hoping it will go smooth.

Go a little further than Perth on Highway 7 and take Bollingbrook Road back to Westport for lunch or dinner at The Cove...you'll thank me...you'll also probably want to go back along Bollingbrook in the other direction...it's a lot of fun. Just watch out for moss on the wooden bridge at the 90 degree turn partway along.

If you really want to splurge...the Cove also has a registered RMT on site on certain days. If you're eating in Perth there's plenty of good places but Mexicala Rosas has a great site next to a slow moving river filled with giant carp that you can feed while you eat.

I'm going up that way soon via Bowmanville, Bancroft, Denbigh, Griffith, Calabogie, Hopetown, Almonte, Kanata. Supposed to be good riding roads that way.
