Took a bike in for service. Figured all it needed was an oil change, air filter, maybe some new plugs... Ted took a look at it and after a slight flick of the wrist he advised the card needed to be cleaned (had a bit of bog). He quoted me $300 for the work (about 3 hours). Given his reputation and all the good things I heard, I decided to have them do it. I took it in first thing in the morning but Ted hadnt arrived yet. 2 of the other mech where there and I advised as to what Ted recommended. I asked if I could stay and watch them do the work as I plan on doing minor maintenance myself in the future. They where totally cool with it and I must say fantastic dudes.

They started to strip the bike (ended up getting an oil/filter change, could have went another 2k but whatever) and upon removing the air filter we could see it was dirty. They gave it a clean and seeing we where right there, they checked out the sync on the carbs. Turns out 3 and 4 where way off! So instead of ripping it all apart, they sync'd them up. The bike seem to idle perfect!! They put it back together and took it for a spin... Flawless... no bogs... more power... better response... They did a great job!!! All in all it took about 1.5 hours for the work.

No carb overhaul needed. I liked the sounds of this as I was prepared to spend $300 but seeing it wasnt needed nor done, I figured I would save a couple of bucks.

When they advised Ted of the work completed and what the cost was, Ted replies with $300

huh?

Could it be that an oil/filter change and sync carbs cost just as much as a carb overhaul?

Cant help but think that because I was quoted $300 for the sync and, was prepared to spend it, I was ripped off when less work was done but still paid the $300.

Kinda hard to believe given all the good things I heard about this place.

Thoughts?

Re: Rosey Toes - Ripped me off?

pretty much any bike shop would have charged you the same price. quit your belly acking.

+1

For $300 you were guided through the whole process from taking the bike apart to finish, that along is worth the money and you got fresh oil and filter and clean air filter and perfectly synced carb. Not a bad deal by any means and yes other shops charges the same and you don't get to watch how they do it or if they even do it.

Re: Rosey Toes - Ripped me off?

Sounds like a great experience (in several ways) and tune up for your bike! :)

Re: Rosey Toes - Ripped me off?

Sounds like you had two guys working on your bike for about 1.5 hours? So 3 hours of labour total?

That price sounds about right to me. Don't worry about it.

Re: Rosey Toes - Ripped me off?

Two mechanics for 1-1/2 hours each, oil and filter, misc materials. While you wait service. $300 sounds fair to me.

Most shops don't let you watch. They also get to it when they can so you have to leave the bike and arrange other transportation.

Re: Rosey Toes - Ripped me off?

Bike mechanics are no different from Doctors - they're just guessing at what's wrong with you (but making educated guesses).
They dissassemble and check/test, until they find things wrong.
"Tuning" involves whatever needs doing - and Ted was just giving you a worst-case estimate as it turns out.
Seems to me that they treated you okay though. Just basic maintenance...

Re: Rosey Toes - Ripped me off?

Hey, next time your bike bogs down you'll know what to do and save the $300. You got a free lesson with your service, I think you own them money.

Re: Rosey Toes - Ripped me off?

I think it was fine. You were mentally prepared to spend 300. The lesson you received was invaluable too. The basic maintenance course at humber is close to 150 isn't it?

If you're still concerned, try to find to a place that provides a signed work order, after the troubleshooting is done. I actually don't know of a motorcycle shop that does this, but I haven't visited all of them.

Generally you're on the honor system. The times I've gone to a bike mechanic, I've told them what I need, they tell me the cost, the work is done, and I pay what I was told.

Take this as a learning experience as well, and as you gain more experience, you'll know exactly what to get done and what the value should be.

ThAnks for all the input. Like I said, the guys where awesome, did a great job and I did get to watch. I've never dealt with a bike shop before but I've had my share of auto mech hence the question.

I wish I could change the posting title!

Re: Rosey Toes - Ripped me off?

Natlat you are telling me that you only paid $300 to learn something that a mechanic school would have charged you about $900 to teach and at the same time they fixed your bike's problems? What else do you want?

The only loss here is if you didn't learn how to sync the carbs yourself during that hands-on lesson!

Ok peeps I get it! My only concern was that I was quoted for a carb overhaul and in the end it didn't need it and so I thought it would be a little cheaper.

Clearly i was mistaken.

And yes, I did learn how to sync the carbs.

Do it yourself now you know. For the 300 you spent you could do a carb sync ( buy the tool) and do oil changes for a while too , put your 300 to better use. Rosey wouldnt rip you off 300 bucks sounds fair to me, bt then again ive never had any of my bikes for 40 years in a shop

I was in a similar situation where I was quoted something ($200 for Carb overhaul by Ted), then when I arrived he billed me for $500 for Carb overhaul and oil change. Then when I kindly asked how the pricing out worked to be $500, he ended up with $440 and said "Okay $450". So I understand all the great things that have been said about him, but the pricing out just sounded so fishy. Plus I stood there for about 45 mins waiting for him.

I do find his pricing unexplained sometimes, but generally does good work, so I leave it at that.
I've been charged $80 for a safety, then $40 the next, then $60 the next?
For the $80, he did have to do some work to make it certifiable -- understandable, but the $40 and $60 he did nothing but look the bike over.

An oil change at roseys is $80 alone....

It is true though if Ted's in a good mood he will hook you up. If he is in a more "business savvy" mood then you get charged the normal rate.

He charged me an extra $10 for a tire change for no apparant reason once. Never asked why but I saw the guy change my tires and nothing was out of the ordinary.

Still a very good shop though, always beats the price of the other guy.
