Roof Cargo Carriers

The good, the bad and the ugly. Your experiences? They look quite flimsy. Will they survive a Canadian winter?

DDE does a speed test on the SeaSuckers mounting system (which holds up) but the cargo carrier flies apart:

I don't think you can use a video where they overspeed the cargo carrier by 100mph as a useful evaluation tool

What vehicle do you want to mount it on? What’s going in it? What weight capacity do you need ?
All important questions , they make everything for $129 crap to $3k indistructable

I have the cheaper Thule version and it has lasted me 7 years with sporadic use (off and on because of Covid). Still works great and holds quite a bit of stuff. I would buy it again in a second. Adds about 1l per 100k to your fuel use and more when it is windy.

I only use it when i go camping. So i got the soft bag that goes straight onto my roof.
I clean and wipe before putting it on there

I havent used a hard box. I have had a yakima roof rack on many vehicles. Some vehicles have better mounting solutions than others. My favorite on one that didnt have factory rails had two studs over each door behind the rubber trim. Rock solid attachment for the rack. Some others have used flat hooks and I didnt trust them much. The rack I have used for years is setup for two bikes and a canoe. With the canoe on I always run a front and rear strap to the car so I dont have to rely on the rack mounts. Iirc rack has an official speed limit and i have been well over it with a canoe on with not even a wiggle.

I have a soft roof bag I picked up in case I needed it. Still new in the box as I havent needed it yet. I prefer to play jenga with space in car before I start strapping things on the outside.

I want to install the roof rack system for my Odyssey...but last I checked the pricing...holy crap...hard no go.

Currently using the cargo box from the 2" hitch in the back. Still open for the roof rack system, for some reason I find it adds a bit more sex appeal to the Odyssey (is that possible) with the roof rails.

EDIT: I have an older Yakima box that saw me go through the East Coast in the Civic Si...was a great thing. Still have it...just no way to mount it at the moment.

Rhino mounting system, Thule Motion XT box going on a 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT-P. My concern is the plastic holding upon to our cold Canadian temps...or not.

I respectfully disagree. It was the mounting system they were testing and SeaSuckers have used the video on their website. But taking the box way above speed, while an extreme test.. it's always good to know results. Mythbusters would have done this test :)

The SeaSuckers is a great option, but I don't imagine the system would work in the winter...once the rubber freezes the suction would be lost.

Here's another example of them in use:

Friends have had a roof box on their car for many years. It never comes off. He isn't too concerned with speed limits. No issues I'm aware of. That car isn't capable of 100 mph over the rated speed though.

A rhino rack isn’t going anywhere, it will stay there just fine and a Thule or Yakima case will stay attacked .

I had a rhino rack on an F150 roof with two Yakima space cases for a three yr period . Even tree limbs didn’t shake it loose .

I have Thule crossbars for my Bronco at the moment . Fit the Ford rails , Areo bars with rubber mounts , hold rock solid

A friend of a friend drives sprinted with his old thule at 140-150 on twisty mountain roads. Big fat skis help support all the luggage on top of them. It is considerably more fuel efficient than open ski racks or baskets with random luggage strapped to them.

It can also haul a surprising amount of uncut firewood, preferably they match big fat ski profiles.

Top boxes are also a a bit more secure when parking in smash and grab areas.

PSA: For fucks sakes please stop the gentrification of top boxes. Whats next? Rooftop tents of super cars?

It's actually a cool concept and makes sense. Not ever car can take side rails in order to add the crossbars to carry a top box.

The box failed at 175mph...I'd like to say this is a success more than a failure. There is ZERO chance of that system being used at those speeds in real life.

Now in our climate...may not be the best idea for the winter months, but in all honesty...this is something I'd def consider instead of buying a full on system for the Odyssey. Plus I could toss it onto the Volt in a pinch.

EDIT: This stuff is as expensive as installing rails on my car...

Another thing, Yakima round bars are my favorite bars. They have multiple widths available to allow for a top box and two bikes on the roof. Closet rods are a cheap and compatible option. The new aero curved bars can put quite a lot of lateral flex on the bars. For example, Tesla OEM bars don't inspire a lot of confidence on rough roads.

I dumped Thule sq bars for Aero , not so much mileage as wind noise . And the Thule box I just acquired will be Color matched to the Bronco . It’s not how you get there , it’s how you arrive ….
