Rode The Gauntlet (401 from Pearson to Pickering and back) Today

Haven't been on this stretch for about seven years. Speeds ranged from "0" to 140 (to keep up with traffic). At no time was I scared, but I was on edge the whole time. I don't think I saw more than 15 bikes there and back. Is there a better alternative to get through the Top of Toronto other than the 407? I thought there would be more bikes at that time of day (11am-1pm) and maybe i was just plain nuts for being there....

I hate it too, all the way from Pickering area to almost Ancaster, it's nuts. I'm either on the bike or with the truck and trailer, so it's always stressful. Too much for this country boy... I'll just take the 407!

Props to you people that do it every day. I'm pretty sure I would have an assault charge by now if I had to.

i find the 407 boring, but quick.
never tried the 407 during rush hour

i hate the 401 at rush hour

407 at rush hour is boring but much quicker then the 401

its the highway, i dont get the big deal....

It's a blast to ride the 401 on a saturday morning/noon, and who are the idiots that ride the 401 at rush hour anyways?

401 is ok if you stay in the leftmost lane on the express. Traffic jams (rush hour) sucks anywhere. Even in the fast lane, I get cars come up close to me because they want to go faster...I just move over and let them through then move back..no big deal...

Cake walk. I do that to window shop at GP Bikes. Hehe.

Come ride with me and filter downtown at rush hour. See if you can keep up.

I ride dvp and 401 during rush hour all the time, it's no big deal anymore just sucks on those super hot days

a) it's the busiest truck highway in North America

b) you get used to it - you were just out of practice OP.

It wasn't even rush hour but it was thin enough that speeds would be high.
What is 140 on your speedo is in reality 125-130. Normal for the fast lane.

I just find a vehicle in the middle lane going about the pace I'm comfortable at and can see through and tag along.
Believe me you don't want the alternatives - boring and way higher risk of cage dorks unless you are inclined to a way high loop up to Stouffeville.
407 rocks along - can be windy and $$.

I used to ride / drive the 401 on weekdays between the 410 and Yonge Street up until last December. Over the past few years the traffic on that section during the afternoon rush period became more and more congested and was one of the factors that helped me decide to retire from my full time job of 38 years. I have no idea how those who use the DVP daily keep their sanity; I would have lost it years ago if I had to use that road!

My commute is now 12 minutes long via Hockley Valley Road to get over to my part time job at the golf course. The only down side is the ride home usually takes a little longer.

BOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRIIIIIIIINNNNNNNGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!! Fast in a straight line soooooooo exciting. :violent1:

People use their bike to commute, sometimes that commute involves a 400 series highway. Good god you're unbalanced. For about 6 months we heard nothing from you, you off your meds? You need :help: http://www.yellowpages.ca/search/si/1/psychiatrist/Toronto, ON?showDD=true

I hate the 401 but it's easier to predict the than taking side roads and dealing with idiots who don't have confidence to drive the 401. Minivans, and distracted parents, ebikes and other riders

400 -> 407 -> 401 -> highway 6 is my normal commute... I work 6pm-6am so my ride to work is a lot worse than the ride home... i really don't encounter much jack-assery, just goof balls who plunk themselves in the left lane and refuse to budge no matter how open the rest of the lanes are.... other than that, it's just dodging all the freakin trucks and the debris from tire blow-outs strewn about the highway....and of course, volume.

the 407 is an absolute pleasure to ride in comparison to the 401, even during rush hour... in the morning I routinely see drivers clocking 140-160 with little to no enforcement in sight
