Road legal mopeds

So I really can't stand e-bikes, so alternately I'd love to know more about the legalities of owning a gas powered moped, or low speed scooter. Something like a tomos or maybe a dymag scooter. Passenger, insurance, plate requirement, etc. Thanks in advance!

I have a Tomos moped that has been lying in my backyard in Mississauga for last 3 years. Last time I started it up was last year and it started up no problem. Can't remember what the odo is probably less than 2k. $400 and it's yours. If you take the 2 1965 Honda Cubs that don't start it's all yours for $500.

Are limited speed motorcycles hard to insure?

Currently have a Yamaha BW 50 plated and insured just for fun. Cost is about $300 to insure a year and you need a LCM license at the minimum. So same as any other motorcycle and I get a break on my insurance for having multiple vehicles...

Not at all worried about the license or insurance, just the ability to carry a passenger. Looks like mopeds are out :(

Yikes...$300/yr for a 50cc?
My 950 barely costs double that.
I guess it costs insurance the same amount whether you get run over on a big or a small bike

I once insured 3 bikes in the same season (49cc moped, 125cc GN125, 250cc B&W) all over $400 each. Clean record, over 30 and all.

Now in Calgary I'm paying $100/yr for the 250cc B&W and my car insurance is $400/yr.

I'm in Brampton don't forget....Highest insurance rates around you know.

Physco44 will give you $150 for the neglected Tomos. And just remove the Cubs that are cluttering up the area.;)

I used to have a motorcycle for many years here in Toronto.
Sold the bike last year, and now I have a couple of scooters, for cheap insurance and other reasons.
I am thinking of selling the scooters and downgrading again to an ebike. Why?

I am tired of paying $$$$$.

E-bikes are not regulated:

No driver's license is required
No written test is required
No vehicle registration or plate is required
No motor vehicle liability INSURANCE is required
No motorcycle helmet required (bicycle helmet)

Do you want to park on the sidewalk? No problem.
Do you want to ride on a nature path? on the park? Allowed.
Do you want to disobey HTA rules of the road? Go for it. Just don’t carry any ID when you operate the ebike.</SPAN></SPAN>

Also, you can modify it so it can go faster. There is no enforcement to stop you (not suggesting that you break the rules, just posting something that somebody told me).</SPAN></SPAN>

It is unfair that riders have to meet so many requirements to own a motorcycle or scooter, and to operate an ebike you don’t have to meet any. I am getting tired of it, and I am getting ready to take advantage of it.

<End rant></SPAN>

Screwed how?
You mean getting into an accident being at fault?
It is the same situation than thousands of crazy bicycle riders in Toronto...

If you mean getting into an accident and the other guy is at fault, I just get compensation through his insurance company.

Not in Ontario. We have no fault insurance aka your own insurance would cover you, if you had it.

If you were in a motor vehicle. As the accident was between a motor vehicle (them) and a non-motor vehicle (you), I believe you will find that their insurance will fix you up.

Considering I pay about $300 in 2 months for my bike that rate sounds pretty damn good.

I ended up buying one of these - Got it insured for $115 a year, so that's cool. I only wanted one to get my little guy acclimated to riding with me, and he's a few years from reaching the footpegs on the big bike. These things are a hoot in the city! Shouldv'e bought one a while ago.
