RIP Johnny Hockey

Mad Mike

Well-known member
NHL player Johnny Gaudreau was killed last night, he and his brother Matthew died when hit by a drunk driver while riding their bicycles.

He was currently playing for Columbus Blue Jackets.

He leaves behind a wife, 2 small children, and a grieving hockey community.

RIP Johnny.

They were in town for his sisters wedding this weekend. Tragic. F that driver. Hopefully the family has enough money for lawyers to make sure the driver never owns anything and never gets a moment of peace for the rest of their miserable life.

*clears throat*

RIP,
That wedding is probably getting canceled.

Does NJ have the death penalty?

Does NJ have the death penalty?
Class 2 felony in NJ. Minimum prison sentence is 5 years per count, max 10 years. NJ doesn't do early releases felons serve at least 85% - 100% of their sentence. Fine up to $200K per count. There is no limit on civil liability.

Judges decide on fines, length of sentence, and whether sentences get served concurrently or consecutively.

Hope the judge is a hockey or cycling fan.

I'm thinking that given the "status" of the deceased, they will try to apply the law to its fullest.

Unless the driver was Marco M . with a high profile lawyer.

Hoping for the former.

Or is just fed up with loser DUI's. Victims popularity shouldn't affect the criminal outcome. Civil on the other hand. Very good case that this driver cost the family many many millions and therefore he should pay restitution at a similar level (which he will never have but making him destitute is good enough).

Someone is killed in a DUI in America almost daily . It makes me very sad that people are outraged because it’s a celebrity that got hit . Like Mathew Perry dying in a hot tub , 100 overdoses a day , but now dead celebrity. It’s all a bit tragic .

There were at least 3 dui deaths in the gta on Thursday. I suspect your one a day in america is very very low.

That might stop that driver from doing it again , MAYBE. A sledgehammer punishment for him won't have a big effect on the next drunk driver.

The massive question is, how do we go premptive on drunk driving? Stop them before they move the vehicle an inch. Breathalyser interface on all cars?

You’re right, no single life is more important than another.

Sometimes a famous persons involvement in a societal problem will encourages media attention. That in turn raises awareness, fosters discussion (like this), and makes people thing. It might also put some pressure on the justice system who of late has abandoned deterrence considerations in sentencing.

In this case, famous person or not, it may well have hit the national press as it’s a compelling news story.. Army Officer charged with DUI after killing two young dads the night before their sisters wedding.

The fellow that killed Johnny Hockey worked at a rehab center? Oy vey
