Rim issue - FJR1300

Hi,

I have had several bikes but never came across this issue, Just picked up a use 2003 Yamaha FJR1300 with 14K km (1 owner) but the rims look pretty beat up, is this normal for a bike with 14k km? I also see the same issue with the rear axle gear case Assy Driveshaft Differential. I have added few pics to see what you guys think. I def want to fix the rims but cant figure out if its rust coming through or something else. There is def paint chips on the rims. I want to powder coat it but I think it first needs a repair job.

Thoughts??

18 year old bike with just 14k km on it, must have spent a lot of time just sitting. Was it in a garage? Under a non-breathing cover? Looks like plain old corrosion to me, the weight on the wheel is speckled with rust on it and the drainage bolt on the diff looks like it's covered with rust. Do you see this type of corrosion elsewhere on the bike or just as per the pictures here.

Anyways, this is not normal, my 2002 137k km bike rims were pristine when sold earlier this year.

No, everywhere else is in mint condition that’s why I don’t get it, the bike also came with the Yamaha cover so I can’t figure out how this was possible.

Brake clean (or fluid) at some point in its history? I would sandblast, powder coat and enjoy.

The corrosion spots on the wheel look indicative to being sprayed by metal/sparks, maybe from grinding or a welder. Did it sit in a shop like that?

looks like a rattle can touch up job to pretty up for sale
right over the corrosion and dirt

salt will cause alloyed parts to go like that
put away dirty or stored with a bag of salt nearby will do that over time

I'd be surprised. Most people spraying for sale would spray the balance weight too. If they have the attention to detail to remove and reinstall balance weight, I would expect at least a half ass sanding of the rim.

looks like new tires
spray can touch up while the wheels were off
and not prepped at all first
just a guess

That rim looks like it was repainted but who ever painted it did a lousy job of prep.
That's oxidization poking through, and you can see more oxidization under the paint.

I know the bike sat for years and the owner did say the front forks were replaced so lets say the leak got on the front rim which explains the damage but what about the rear. very odd

and that is exactly what I thought, there were paint chips which you can still see from the pics, and someone tried to spray the rims and did an wful job

The tires are brand new. very sad people do half ass job, I wish the rims were fixed and I would have paid the extra for the work. Now i have to get the tired off and everything else attached to it and get someone take the tire off and send it to be sand blasted and power coated.

What does the uvip show about its history? (where it's been)
Are the rims mucked up all the way around, or just a section on each one?
Have you drained the rear diff oil yet?
The rusty bolt on the pumpkin is the filler bolt.....drain bolt is on the bottom.
Is it in the same condition / colour?

Well, you could do this, but if it was me I'd just do it next time you're changing out worn tires.

And I wouldn't powder coat them.
Too thick and will chip.
Media blast em and HOSE em with Tremclad, couple of coats (read the instructions).
Treclad is much softer, more pliable than powder coat and so takes more abuse, AND you can touch them up later.

Looks like the kind of corrosion you see on bikes that are barn stored on a dirt floor - or well toured.

While the pic isn’t perfect, the rotor looks a bit scored for only 14km, on an FJR they should look like new. Why at such low mileage were the forks replaced?

Makes me suspect the bike may have some undisclosed history. I like to look for telltale marks on fasteners, plastic figment, paint, brakes etc. Take it to a competent bike mechanic, they might give you a better assessment.

And what’s with that balance lead? They should be stick ons, that thing appears to be a car weight pounded onto the midline of the rim? Cant say I’ve seen that before.

My '16 FJR has 50 000kms on it and my rims/pumpkin still look pristeen...

As for the Wheel weight... My bike came factory new with these type of weights... I use stick-ons myself, but... The clip on weights are a thing...

Thr rims look bad all around. I did change the diff oil. the bolt came out with no issues. The bolts are the same colour
