Riding local = safer

A buddy of mine insists on riding local only. Roads with 60 to 70kms speed limits. He said it's safer, plus he stays right and go slow. I told him intersections are more dangerous than the highway. Lots of riders are killed or injured by left turning cars. He's response was that those guys ride crazy, he goes slow in the right lane.

What do you guys think of this. I think it's kind of stupid. Local streets are not safer than the highway. Even if you go "slow" and stay right. He also refuses to spend money on proper riding pants. He wears jeans and running shoes. When I commented on the gear, he once again said it's OK he rides slow...

How do I knock some sense into this guy?

Your buddy is a narrow minded idiot. Don't bother wasting your time. The only time he's going to get sense knocked into him is when a left turning soccer mom in an SUV does it.

I don't think there's much you can do. You told him your concerns, he's a grown boy and will make up his own mind. IMO riding streets with lots of street lights and intersections is WAY more dangerous than country roads / highways with less feeder streets.

Your friend is scared of leaving home. Tell him to grow a pair.

As for the jeans and running shoes, ask him if he's every crashed on a bicycle. By his logic, he shouldn't receive any scrapes or cuts because he's going slow.

Yea I don't think I will have the opportunity to ride with him anymore. Staying local means his radius of travel is very limited. All the good riding roads require some highway travel.

Plus he's getting a cruiser. (to ride slow in the local streets). A cruiser is built for the highway! I think he should get a scooter...

Simply dont ride with him!!!... end of thread. lol :D

What I think we're all forgetting to ask is....how many Tim Horton's lots are there in the general area? because this seems to be the concern here...not riding...posing...he's riding slow so all the girlies will wave their panties at him.

tell him to trade in his motorcycle for an e-bike...He'll fit right in and save a lot of money.

Your noob friend will learn one day, that hwy is safer...

Beat me to it. Sounds like your friend should hand in his license and stick to a cage or the city bus.

If anything, riding slow (aka under the limit) would be more dangerous, because now you have people annoyed with you going slow, doing dumb things to get around you.

With regards to gear, there are a a few of us here that know of or crashed at a very low speed. The asphalt eats straight into your knee even at 30km/h. Even my 10km/h pine cone crash effed up my knee a little (was wearing regular jeans).

Your friend will learn by first hand experience lol

Yea, I told him exactly the same thing. Jeans have no knee protection. I said if you fell, you will get hurt. He's response was, yea I better stick to local and go slow...

Whatever, I think he will fit in with the cruiser crowd nicely.

I enjoy speeding past an armada of pirates on my bike when they're travelling 15 km/h below the speed limit.

You can't make people learn something. You talk to them and if they listen to you great, if not they will go their own way. Maybe they learn by themselves in time, maybe they don't. Not much else to do. If he's a good friend you accept him for who he is, if he's not a good friend then find a smarter friend!

Hey hey! I heard most accidents happen within five minutes of home. So I moved away!
