riding areas for kids

Anyone know of a good area (ideally legal) in the Durham region to teach a kid to ride? I am looking to teach my son this year, but doesn't seem to be too many options close.

Thanks

Ganaraska? Need plates, insurance, and trail passes to be legal.

Gray legal area? I took my son to an industrial area on a holiday and found a big grassy area.

Ganaraska is an option, just wasn't sure if there are any good open areas. I haven't been there and heard there is a lot of trails and single track, might not be great a kid just starting out.

I plan to bring my kids there this summer, 6 and 10. There's everything there. Open parking lots, wide logging roads, double track atv trails, single track bike trails, a nice canteen/rest area.

It's going to be my stomping grounds this year as well - my son's 11 - maybe I'll see you around.

The Ganny is a great place to teach kids to ride. I've taught all my kids there. The great part about it is you can start them out on the roads and as their skills progress you can venture into the tougher stuff. There's something in there for everyone.

Steel City Riders Look them up www.steelcityriders.ca got a club track ride it anytime all the time no cost once you get a membership. But its just outside brantford

how are you working around requirements for the bike to be registered and insured, while it is used by kids 8-10 year old without any license?

What work around? I haven't actually done it yet (just bought my daughters bike), so hopefully one of the other fellows will chime in.

However, I believe it works that the bike is in your name (the adults), but it is insured for a minor to use. You just need to find an insurance company that will do it.

Not working around anything. Kids don't need to be licensed to ride offroad. All bikes are plated in my name and the insurance company is fully aware that my kids are riding them.

I'm with State Farm in case anyone is wondering. Pay about 70/yr per bike. Liability only.

yeah afaik green plate and insurance and good to go.

Chatsworth Motopark http://www.motoparkracing.com is also okay but a hike to get there and more motocross geared but good fun all the same as the kids get to see lots of air and other kids riding. There are trails not part of the motocourse.
My kid was in mid teens when he started and it really improved his confidence and made him a better road rider.
Shame there are so few places :(

Appreciate all the input. Anyone know where there is a good spot to park at Ganaraska that has some open riding areas close by? It is hard to tell what area is good for a beginner rider by looking at maps...thanks again.

Did you read my post above? I linked you to a google map with parking waypoint you can use to click for directions. Switch to satellite mode and you can clearly see the open area I talk about.

I'll re-quote it here:

Another decent place would be "Big Dog Parking" as we call it (because we quite frequently see this big black dog hanging around), look for it bookmarked on this map:

Switch the map to Satellite view, and if you look just West of that parking area you'll see a nice open area between two patches of forest. That big open area would be ideal to watch your boys to make sure they are getting along OK. No trees, nice wide trails - the only issue is that area is sandy and a little whoopsied - otherwise a great learning area.

Also - that parking lot is technically outside of the Ganny; I've never had a problem parking there and I know many others that do, but just be aware.

Xhumeka, that spot looks great, I do not know how I missed your post....anyways thanks for taking time to reply.
