Rider Down In Cambridge

GWS Rider,

It was my neighbor who was driving the Hyundai.
He said the light turned yellow and the oncoming car in the left lane stopped and as the light turned red he turned left and the bike tried to blow through the red in a blind busy intersection.
Said it was a young guy on a cruiser squiding it out with shorts and a t-shirt, had major road rash and a broken leg.

Not defending, just saying what I was told.

So both your neighbour and the rider went through a red?

Sorry, Neighbor turned left on the red (Busy intersection and had to wait for the red to make the turn) and bike was going straight.

Left turning motorist has to ensure the turn can be made in safety. No matter how he characterizes the rider's actions in his recollection, he has to yield.

I am under the impression that from the statements provided that the hyundai was already in the intersection, and had to complete the turn when the light turned red. Since the light was red the biker was proceeding through a red light at high speed. Safe to check for red light violaters, but definitely is a bit beyond the responsibilities of a driver who can make the assumption all cars will stop at a red light, unless already in the intersection. Pretty reasonable, not 100% safe.

Hope the rider recovers and will learn to not try to 'beat the light' and perhaps invest in some protection, if that is the case.

Hope the driver will learn to spot vehicles who blow red lights.

Still the driver making the left turns fault and will probably be charged. The left turning driver always has to make sure the way is clear regardless of light colour.
