Review on STG reviews (sportbike track gear)

So, STG has a ton of review videos on Youtube, helmets, almost any type of gear. They have some guides on changing oil, bleeding brakes too I believe. Overall pretty decent vault of information.

Now that I've been riding for a few years and come back to revisit these guys and get a review on some knee guards, I noticed that the reviews are actually pretty shallow. I checked out a review on the RS Taichi Stealth Knee Guard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv_Ism5PCV0&lc=6TW44CM5X2w8JDD-SjowJY3_IHo9OUhW3lAPZ0r7qyI) but it really didn't tell me anything I wouldn't have known from reading a product description.

Anyways, you can just read the comments on the video, but basically I gave them some feedback on their video and said hey, I like what you're doing but I think you need to give some more valuable information in your reviews.

Their reply was this: "There are also some items that do not always get used prior to the video, like these as Van doesn't have a street bike".

Really? So this guy is giving a review on a product he's never used, and he doesn't ride street? What use is this review then? Something is wrong with that. In the video he says that they are good for spreading impact, etc. I think that is just fluff, how does he know? Sure he's wearing them but how does he really know it's comfortable when your legs are tucked for extended periods of time, or in hot days, etc.?

I know it takes time to take every product out and try it, test it under different circumstances (riding positions, styles, weather, etc.) but if you're not even prepared to ride with the gear once, then you really shouldn't be writing/recording a review on it.

Good post, and good catch. Once the sponsorship $$ and ad revenues roll in, most of these guys could care less what their reviews say - not unlike any other "independent" review service. They're really only good when they're broke and doing it out of interest.

I like webbikeworld for reviews - esp. for helmets.

I typically watch the Revzilla reviews, those guys "claim" to all be riders. Not sure anymore...

They probably are, his reviews are very thorough and I've never been lead astray. Just cause the guy reviewing doesn't ride street doesn't mean he doesn't ride.

You'll notice stg will never give negative reviews on any of their products, which is to be expected. The videos provide prospective buyers additional perspective and insight into the products (something written descriptions and pictures may miss out on).

I think Brian Van races in the AMA, and they do have other staff that ride street there

Their reasoning for no negative reviews is that if they don't like it they won't carry it.

The latest vid on their youtube channel has Van passing errrbody at a track day, not sure what group he's in.

I'm not doubting Van's abilities on a bike, but the fact is they said they don't test every product out that they review. Then why review it?

They're more descriptions than reviews.

Agreed. He does point out his personal favourite stuff though. Supertech boots and Shoei x12s as an example. If he's ridden in it or crashed in it he usually elaborates on his experience.

Pretty much. They're more detailed explanations of the product than a proper review. Do you really think that a company trying to sell you a product is going to outright say that xyz product is a POS? Even if they try not to sell POS products, you'll notice non of these youtube reviews (Revzilla, STG, etc.) will ever explicitly point out any negatives of a product.

Take these videos for what they are, simply additional information that you won't get from stock photos and the PR description that each site copies and pastes from the manufacturer. Which is still a good thing, valuable information when you're looking at something new. First thing I do when I'm shopping for something new is see if there are any youtube "review" videos from these sites.

Once again, they're trying to sell you products. These videos are simply another marketing tool.

"Hi! I'm Brian Van from sport bike track gear, sportbiketrackgear DOT COM. 5"11, mildly athletic build"

Gives you a bit more info than what the manufacturers print on their tags or on their websites.
As in anything on the internet, you take it with a grain of salt, make your own judgement based on your evaluations.
I'd have to say the vids are the reason why I'm a loyal customer of the HELD Phantom gloves.

It's too bad GTAM can't create a review database (not just a thread) that is easily searchable for all the reviews that are on here. I'd be interested to post all my experiences if such a thing existed.
