Replacement Fairing "Plexiglass"?

Hey Guys,

New member here.

I just picked up a used fairing for my Suzuki VZ800. The plexiglass is all foggy and hazy - beyond repair. Is there anyone in town that we know of that can cut and shape a replacement for a reasonable fee?

This particular fairing is long discontinued and from what I've read, was only available in Russia and Japan (although I could be mistaken).

I've thought of taking it to a tint/vinyl shop if I can't find somebody to make a new one, but I'd rather get a replacement made if possible.

Thanks,

T

It's a 2000 Suzuki VZ800

From what I understand, the fairing and chin spoiler were part of a factory offered package in 1997, exclusive to Japan and Russia.

The fairing is genuine Suzuki, it has the logo stamped into it along with various Japanese markings.

I'm not sure about having it cut, because it would need to be heated and shaped. It can however been buffed or polished. Headlight resurfacing kits work decently.

Unfortunately it's too far gone at this point. The original owner spray painted it black and that ended up "etching" the plexi. I'm sure the solvent I used to remove the paint didn't help much either, although it really didn't matter at that point.

I've tried Turtle Wax headlight restore kit, carnuba wax, plastic lubricant and left it to soak in a variety of oils. It's cooked.

I knew this going in, and I'm planing on either limo tinting it or sanding it down and shooting it with a tint coat.

I'm just thinking maybe somebody knows of "a guy" that specializes in this sort of thing, as I'd rather leave it clear.

I know of a guy who is getting into vacuum forming, he is getting setup, not sure when he will be ready to go, but I need a new windscreen as well, and he will be using me as a test subject....

.

Nice! You know that old saying: "two test subjects are better than one" lol.

I'm also located in Mississauga. PM me if anything pans out.

P+A Plastics in Hamilton. They show that service on their website.

Have you checked with Gustafsson? http://www.bikescreen.com/categories.asp

They will have a windscreen for you. You just have to figure out which one.
There are local agents for Gustafsson; Walridge Motors, CMR Racing or a guy called Pat that goes by Pacomotorstuff. Shipping one windscreen will cost more than the windscreen.

Why not wet sand and polish it?

I may give that a shot, I think it's too far gone though. I'm also worried because if I do that I'll be unable to apply a sheet of limo tint to it as a "plan b".

It looks like the plastic has "micro bubbles" all the way through, not just on the surface, probably from a chemical reaction to the paint or paint remover. I tried snapping pics but the iPhone does a lousy job at showing it, just looks cloudy.

They have it! thanks! http://www.bikescreen.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SuzukiMauader

With shipping it comes out to just under $200, kind of steep but it's good to know I can get it if I screw up with the tinting.

Thanks again!

"beyond repair" are you sure?

Before you go much further try some Mothers mag and aluminum polish. This stuff is amazing and it did wonders on the hazy windshield on my snowmobile.

No, I'm not sure. Just nothing I've tried has cleared it up yet.

I'm inclined to try that, but do you think I'll still be able to apply a layer of vinyl tint after, if it doesn't end up working?

I don't want to try anything that will create micro-abrasions that may prevent the tint from sticking.

I would say go for it. I can't believe that it would interfere with tinting later.

Wet sand and polish can fix really messed up hazy headlights...don't see why it wouldn't work here, it's just going to be a lot more work. Make sure you have a buffer to use or your arm might fall off from polishing!

In the end the finish will be smoother than anything after a good wetsand and polish!
