Renting for Visiting Friend

Hi all,

I have a friend coming to visit from out of town - 24 years old, M2 but doesn't own a bike right now, clean insurance history.

We'd like to get out riding together, so I've been looking into renting. Couple questions:

  1. Is GTA Exotics the only place around to rent from? Anyone have any experiences there? Rates are a bit of a gouge, but I guess the bikes probably get dropped pretty often. Plus if they have no competition...
  2. I'm 27/M2, so I might be the renter if you have to be 25, and then my friend would ride my bike. Would he be covered under my insurance in that case?

Some of the Harley dealers out west of Oakville rent Harleys.

According to the GTA Exotics website:
The driver must be 25 years of age or older to rent cars. 21 years of age for motorcycles (with proof of their own insurance)

M2 licenses are accepted providing you can prove that you are a competent rider (a Toronto Exotic staff may follow you for 5-10 minute ride along a designated route

If your friend is only coming to visit you and staying a short time, then the bike is covered if he rides it. But note that any claims that are incurred while he drives it will follow you around.

I was looking into renting from exotics. But once I looked into it I found out they are scumbags and there is little upkeep on the bikes. Google some reviews before you take the plunge.

Thanks guys,

Major - so my insurance would in effect be covering both of us at the same time? (My friend on my bike, and me bringing my own proof of insurance to Exotics?). The other weird thing is that it seems like I'm double-insured at Exotics, as they also require a $44/day insurance premium (and actually, it seems like that comes with a $3,500 deductible... This global service AdMo-Tours seems to be an agent for them - same inventory and pricing - and lists that on their site).

Tdot - thanks for the heads-up. Wow. The reviews are absolutely scathing... Ugh, how are there no options available at all? Maybe there's just no way to make a quality moto rental business viable because of the wreck rate and the insurance costs that would come with that?

What about renting from an individual? As I understand it, this would void any insurance coverage they have for the time I'm on the bike (as long as the insurance company could prove money changed hands). But is there a way my own insurance could cover me on their bike? (And I just leave them with a deposit for the full value of their bike basically?) Even if the bike itself wasn't covered, but I still had proper liability etc. going, I might be into it if the bike wasn't too expensive.

You can't simply rent off of someone else unless they have a special endorsement on their insurance policy allowing them to do so. I believe it is SEF5:
