Renting a Car International Licence

I currently have a G1/M2 and am 26 years old. I am in the process of getting my G2.

I also have an international licence, that I use to rent cars when I travel. My question is, is it legal for me to rent a car and drive using my international licence?

I do not own a car, and may need some sort of transport going forward.

An international drivers permit is NOT a drivers licence, but merely a translation of your existing drivers licence issued in the jurisdiction in which you reside. It is only valid when accompanied by an actual drivers licence.

So no, your IDP shouldn't be sufficient for you to rent a car, unless (as per the G1) they allow you to because you are accompanied by a properly licenced driver (although I would be shocked if they let a G1 permit holder drive off the lot in one of their cars).

Let me re state- it is an international licence not permit. Its a licence that was obtained in another country.

If you already have this license, why not try to convert it to a full G at the MTO? Might have to do 1 road test but you'll go straight to G (eliminate graduate licensing).

It's not really INTERnational, it's issued by and valid in another country, right? Like nfq says, you should have been able to skip some of the process here. The process depends on where your licence is from though. The other thing is, you may have had to have made a declaration of experience at the time of applying for an Ontario DL. It sounds like you didn't move to Ontario with that licence though, did you? If you did, then the previous experience applies. If you're going through the process in Ontario and another country at the same time, I doubt that will help you skip the graduations, and the rental companies here will likely look at your Ontario DL.

Edit: I was assuming you meant is it legal here, and I doubt it would be. If you move to ON with an out of country DL, it's good for 60 days only, and you must apply for an ON DL (or not drive, I guess).

Im writing my G2 in 1.5 weeks, hopefully i pass this time

The driver licence issued in the another country should be valid for upto 3 month in Canada. That might help you...

An international drivers permit is NOT a drivers licence...

I tend to agree. Once somewhere in EU, I was at the car rental shop using my Ontario license to rent a car when this other guy was trying to use an international license to no avail. I left with a car and he on a taxi!

Just curious, did you have to pass a test to get your international license or was it just a matter of paying a fee to obtain it after producing a valid driver license?

It's $25 (wow, was $5 when I got mine 10 years ago), an looks like an identity card from the cold war. Need to show your current licence and then they stamp the appropriate classes of vehicles.

OP has a drivers licence issued by some other country, not actually an "international drivers licence" so much as a "foreign drivers licence".

Unfortunately as he already has a permit in Ontario, the license from another country is no longer applicable. Only the Ontario permit will be honoured.

I believe its only valid for the first 6months after your arrival to ontario. after that driving with a international license would be considered as driving with no license.

again this happened to someone i know but the cop gave him a break and asked me to drive it.

I was under the impression that you have to use your provincial license along with the international one. You can't just have the international license.
