Removing Liability (Scam?) - Car Insurance

I just switched my car insurance over to The Personal (Insurance company) this year. I have two cars on one policy. I am parking one car for the winter. Apparently I can't get only Comprehensive on the parked car because "in Ontario you are required to have liability insurance". I have spoken to 4 different agents from The Personal and am getting the same story. Paying $74 a month to have my summer car parked in a locked garage over the winter seems pretty unreasonable. Is there any truth to their claim? Do I have to have liability on a parked car? Is there anything I can do? I moved over from Johnson Insurance and they gave me no problems getting just Comp over the winter.

Thanks,

-Dan

You should definitely see if you can escalate these calls. It may be one thing to be company policy, but it's certainly not a legal issue.

Do it every year with my RV. No issue, just need to tell the broker and pay only the comp till the renewal comes. Mine works out perfect.., November - May

I just pay full rate to have my Camaro Z28 in the garage all winter. Didn't even think of changing the policy for the winter. Hmm..

Statefarm offers that. I had a winterbeater for a while

The Personal let me do that before. Did they ask if you were removing the plates? I'm not 100% sure, but from what I recall, all I told them was that the plates were coming off and it would be parked for the winter. They were fine with that.

Monnex told me that due to fraud issues, you can suspend liability coverage but you keep paying full price. When you reinstate liability they refund you what you paid for liability when it was parked. Maybe the personal is doing something similar but sucks at explaining it.

I had fire & theft only on my Miata which sat in my garage for 1.5 years before I sold it...I am with TD Meloche Monnex so no, you don't have to have liability or full coverage...

I'm another one that took liability off the vehicle I wasn't driving. I just had a jeep and a pick-up, so if I needed the pick-up I would just email my broker and let her know how many days I would be using it.

Its bs. I do it on my bikes and 3 cars every winter

Why would you do it in your bike?
Does it save you like $3/season?

Also depends on when you do it. I believe March uses a small portion of your premium, so if you hold off on multiple bikes until April, you could probably save a bit. It's probably the cars that save him the real money though.

for a parked car (in your garage), i think you can only get fire/theft. Comprehensive would be shady cuz it's in your garage - who's going to damage it? - only you.

when i had a summer and winter car the one off the road cost 20 or 30 bucks a month.
i know a few good brokers, pm me if you want their numbers.

your other option is to completely remove all coverage then put the car back on the policy when you want to... they dont like doing thie because they loose money but if you arent worried about fire/theft then its your call.

In a similar situation my agent gave me the "What if" routine. What if someone was in your garage and got beheaded by a power window? It's called risk management. If your garage is secure what's the risk?
