Same sohc project as below has a couple pistons with rings stuck in the grooves. The fully seated ring provides no opening to pry from. Any good suggestions for penetrating oil or other elixier to help loosen them? Other extraction methods you've used?

I've never done it but it seems like a great fit for ultrasonic to clean schmoo out (assuming you have one large enough to drop a piston in).

Old school answer is to soak it in gasoline it should pop out then

Old School trick that's worked for me: Soak in ATF overnight. Set BBQ to 500, heat the pistons for 20 minutes, tap the stuck ring with a small punch and she should pop out.

After reading this I went to the CVMG xmas dinner and asked the silver hair there. A common theme was thinning a lubricant so it could seep in.
I mixed @Mad Mike 's ATF half and half with acetone and then forgot about it for a couple days. One ring released on it's own the other took minimal prodding to get out (no heat required)
