Registration/insurance on used bike

i'm buying a used bike, and would like to know what i have to go through to register the bike under my name.
Would i have to get insurance right away like cars in Ontario or would i have the freedom of waiting out on the insurance after getting the bike

you need to get the uvip from the seller...take that along with the ownership signed over to you plus your proof of insurance and you register the bike in your name and get it plated...without these items, you cannot register the bike in your name...i just did this on thursday june 30...

so i can't register the bike under my name unless i have insurance? i want the bike with out plates and insurance under my name. I am planning on getting insurance later.

I can tell you for fact that i bought my bike in january of this year, and switched the ownership into my name and I did this without getting my insurance or plates until March. You are good man, just pay your taxes on it and you are good to go.*

You can register the bike under you're name without insurance but it will be deemed unfit. When you want to get your plates, you need the safety certificate and proof of insurance.

*Note: If you register it under your name without insurance and have it as unfit, you can't come back later on to get a temporary license plate to be able to ride it to a mechanic. (Well, that's what happened with me.)

It works just like a car. You can register a car in your name without insurance, too (I know because I did it last year). You just can't plate it until you have all the other documents in order (UVIP [you should get this before you agree to buy it to check for liens], insurance, safety, emissions [if its a car], etc).

You dont need insurance to transfer over the ownership (You can get insurance whenever, some insurance companies dont even require the vehicle to be under your name...), all you need is to have the seller get the safety certification for the bike (if the vehicle will be plated and operated on the roads) , the UVIP, and the bill of sale.

For more information refer to:

This is also true. The car I bought before the one I registered without insurance had an insurance policy (from myself) on it the day before I bought it. My bike also had insurance the day before I bought it.

what if i have the ownership and proof of insurance do i still need the uvip to register the bike in my name and get it plated???

I think a UVIP is just for your own safety. Its only $20 for a piece of mind.

It is a requirement by the MTO if you are buying privately.

Yes if buying privately. No if buying from a dealer. FYI, it is the accountability of the seller to provide the UVIP ($20 from the MTO). Anyone can order a UVIP on any vehicle if they have the VIN.

Not necessarily. If you already have the safety certificate and UVIP but no insurance, you can register the bike as an "unplated" FIT vehicle. You won't get plates at the time of registration butthe bike will be considered FIT. Later when you do finally get insurance, you'll be able to get plates without having to get another safety certificate.

Thank-You... i just spent half an hour searching these forums looking for this. I'm buying a bike with a safety but don't want to insure/plate it until the spring. Didn't want to make a new post, glad i found this :)
