Registering new bike requires insurance within 6 days???

Hi,

I'm just reading though the motorcycle manual and I'm trying to understand if its required to show proof of insurance before you can register your motorcycle. Is that true? Do you need it at the time of registration as the new owner of the bike?

I would believe if you want to plate your bike and ride it you would need to show it, but to register as a new owner of a bike? What if I'm not riding yet, or if I'm waiting till I take my course?

What if I register after 6 days, from the day I purchased the bike? What's the point of obtaining a SSC that has an expiry date of 36 days if the MTO requires you to register within 6 days. :S

Please, if someone can explain this to me, I would greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks!

You do not need insurance to register the bike.
You need insurance and a FIT motorcycle registration to get a plate.

You get a FIT motorcycle registration by bringing in a safety certificate when you register the bike (or you can bring it in afterwards and they'll change it.)
If you don't have a safety cert it will register as UNFIT (they can change it on spot upon bringing in a safety certificate)

Thank you! The manual seems a little misguiding in what is requirements of papers.

Is SSC a one-time registration get to a FIT bike status? Or would I be required to do it everytime I renew my insurance?

SSC is required to get the license when you transfer ownership. Insurance Co may want to see a copy of it as well. You will not be required to provide SSC again unless you allow your plates and insurance to lapse. If you want to get a new sticker and new insurance again you must show a new SSC. Does that make sense?

Sorry, but there is some wrong info here. You only need a safety to register your bike as FIT. Once the vehicle is in your name as FIT you will not need a safety certificate again. The only time you need to get a safety again is if you wish to transfer the ownership (from/to a spouse or into your name in the case of a lease buy out). If you wish to leave your FIT vehicle unplated for a while when you hand in your plates you have the status changed to FIT - UNPLATED. When it's time you bring in your ownership and new insurance and pick up a new plate.

Thank you! I'd be dang if I would have to pay an SSC every year cause that would basically empty out my pockets of change from already paying for insurance.
