Reducing helmet noise...

Time to redneck engineer something.

The wind noise in my helmet SUCKS. And I've been hearing the fz6 is known for helmet buffetig due to the aerodynamics. I'm throwing on a better screen this summer to help.

I can't ride with ear plugs/ ear buds because I feel a pressure in my head, and I can't hear the outside world.

I notice that if I shrug my shoulders up to my helmet, the wind noise is gone.
So, who has rigged up something to seal off the air from rushing under?

Im thinking of getting some mesh material, or even panty hose, to basically seal up the gap between my neck/chin and the helmet. I don't want solid material so I can still maybe stay cool in the summer.

Helmet is a shark RSI.

What ingenious idea does anyone here have??

I have a SharkRSI and I put a Windjammer on it. A little awkward getting it on and off but it does what you mention, cuts off the flow of turbulent air up into the helmet from below.

It will work a bit but you should really go for the earbud option in addition and swallow a few times and pinch your nose and blow to equalise the pressure.

Edit: Here's a link http://www.amazon.co.uk/WINDJAMMER-REDUCES-Helmets-original-Worldwide/dp/B003FHLNVK it still leaves your neck bare to stay cool.

The pressure isn't an inner ear pressure that would be cleared with a valsva maneuver, it's more like its in my cranium. Very uncomfortable, I made it maybe a km with ear buds before I took them out.

Ill look up the wind jammer and see if it helps in conjunction with a new wind screen.

Im installing a sena smh5 so ear buds/plugs won't work.

i don't know what kind of tips you use on your earbuds, but I used to hate the silicone tips on my old buds. switched to some nice Logitech UE700 headphones, and use the comply foam tips. They are comfortable enough that i could wear them all day and not even know I'm wearing them. I use them on every ride, sometimes just as earplugs if I don't feel like listening to tunes.

I don't know if you saw it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPNPZJingZA
Not sure about Shark but Shoei makes this - whisper strip kit, scroll down http://www.shoei-europe.com/uk/products/accessories/. Not sold in NA but I saw it on kijiji couple of times

I know you are thinking about modding your FZ6. If you go naked (I did at some point) - it is much much better in terms of buffeting.
For my setup for long rides I bought Givi tall windscreen - much smoother airflow. In the city I still use Puig shorty. If you want to try Givi - PM, you are welcome to borrow it for couple of days. I am in Toronto, mine is 2007

Have you tried the green max lite ear buds? I hated all ear buds because of the 'pressure in my head' until I tried these ones.

AGV helmet , stock exhaust and double bubble windscreen.......dream rides return

I use custom molded ear plugs which are molded to fit my ear canal. They're quite comfortable; I can't even tell that I'm wearing them.

Thanks dude, I think I saw a post you made about the puig double bubble shield on the fz6 forum, but a bunch like it so that's what I'm going for. Im not going naked, just a paint job. I'm 5'7" so I'm tucked in a bit more.

I wear my ear buds a lot. An hour in the am for my work outs almost every day, and lots at work when I'm in the bush, I sleep with them in so they are comfortable with me.

Thanks for everyone else's input, have a few options to look at and play with.
Most likely will end up with a wind jammer and see where that ends up.

Im also very close to needing a new helmet. I got this one in 09, so it's close to upgrade time. I just wish we could test ride with different helmets.

Try Surefire Ear Pro ear plugs. (sorry about the cheesy pic... fastest one I could find that shows the unit and a person wearing it)

Shoei all the way - I am biased :D I tried Arai, AGV, Shark and NJC - Shoei still fits me the best and I am on my second one.

I also hear people raving about Shuberth - Simon from Topendz got one and loves it. I think I will give it a closer look when it's time to upgrade.

I actually have a pair of these for work and love them. I can try them untill I get my communicator and then I'll have to work out how to get the helmet quiet.

I know shoei doesn't fit my head, but I'll see about an AGV I hear those are quiet.
And before you go new windscreen route - really, feel free to borrow mine to try.
I have a 2005 so unfortunately, I don't think we can share. Thanks though, us fz6 guys are few between!

Ah, I see - no problem.

Is it the plug expanding in your ear that is causing the pressure or the pressure building up behind the plug?

What i have done is taken a rubber ear plug and drilled a very tiny hole in it to allow the pressure to come out. It help and blocks most of the wind noise out. If it's pressure around the plug from expansion try a smaller or fitted plug.

I have to wear ear plugs a lot while working so i have tried many different ones. (At least 50 different models)

I love ear plugs, and refuse to ride without them. The first 16 yrs I rode with no ear plugs. Then when I tried them, I hated them....but forced myself to after deciding I wanted to keep my hearing (my father was born deaf). I have used them religiously for the last 13 yrs of riding.
I have tried numerous different ear plugs, some better than others. Some really hurt, some gave me earaches, even for days after riding.
I suggest you just keep trying different ear plugs till you find one that works for you.

Also a helmet skirt will help. Scorpion sells one for EXO700/750, maybe one is available for your helmet too.

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned getting louder pipes to drown out the wind noise....

After about 4 months of riding the perpetual tinnitus will drown out almost all ambient sound anyway ;)

Maybe I'm missing something so correct me if I'm wrong...but doesn't wearing ear plugs prevent you from hearing what's going on around you which could be missing a car/bike/anything coming up on your side?
I don't do a lot of highway and the bike's not that loud so the biggest noise in my helmet (Bell Vortex) is the wind...and the Vortex is not quiet at all. I'll probably pick up a new one for next season and keep this one as a passenger helmet.
