recent book you read - recommend or no?

Over popularized

Game of Thrones (books are at least 3 times better than the series)

The Walking Dead (graphic novels awesomeness)

I'm reading "the colour of death" by Michael Cordy. It's been really good so far. I've already read 4 or 5 of his other books and I like them all. His style's like Dan Brown (well-researched) and he weaves really interesting concepts into his stories.

Hopefully we can get this thread going like your movie recommendations one. I can go through a couple of books a week so I'm always looking for suggestions (especially non-fiction).

Just finished reading SuperFreakonomics...lot of loose connections b/w seemingly random events but overall a fairly good read. I read the first one as well (Freakonomics) and really enjoyed that read as well.

I'm looking forward to this thread as I've gotten back into reading and the e-reader has made it much easier to carry books around.

Reading the first book in Game of Thrones. It's taken me some time but has been well worth it.

There's so much setup and explanation in the first half of the first book, but once it gets going, so much better than the show. Keep at it.

I couldn't get through the first Freakonomics for that reason. I just have a couple of chapters left, but as the book went on, the causal claims & connections got a bit more outrageous. I mean, making a psychology claim based on how a bagel business ran? The sumo wrestling cheating made sense, but some of them were a little too much of a stretch for me.

Outliers is a similar book that's a little bit more believable. It's basically a book about the factors of success and how some people are more "lucky" than others when it comes to success. An example is how hockey players born earlier in the year are more likely to make it into the major leagues.

People still read???

+1 LoL I actually stopped reading for a while...then I got into the e-book thing and frankly I haven't looked back. Way more convenient and I've not looked back. Somehow I managed to get my parents into it too!

Just finished reading "Keep the Change" by Steve Dublainca. It's about a journalist who's so confused about tipping that he goes around America interviewing various people from bathroom attendants to prostitutes. It's a bit of an eye opener for people who are cheap tippers - even gets a little philosophical at the end. I found it to be a good read 'cause it gives you a little bit of insight into random professions...things a taxi cab driver, a sex hotline girl, a furniture mover, orw even a stripper have to deal with.

His prose isn't anything amazing (he writes sort of like a columnist from vice), and he sort of gets a little carried away with his thoughts on holiday tipping (and that's coming from a generous tipper lol) but the content is interesting. It's 4.99 at indigo in the sale section :D

I picked up Survivor but Suttree was sold out.
