Rebuilding my motor. 1981 Yamaha.

I've got to rebuild the motor on my 1981 250cc Yamaha Exciter. I ran it out of oil, and the engine still works but is clanking. I belive the problem is in the top end of the motor, thats where most of the noise is comming from. Someone said it could be the shaft. I've managed to locate an engine from a 185cc Exciter of the same year. Does anybody know if the parts would be compatable? Any other input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Buy another bike or wrecker motor. Seriously...

Yeah that looks like my best option. Would i need to find the same motor (250 exciter) or would it be possible to fit in a different motor ?

Anything is possible.. However, to make your life as easy as possible, I'd get the same motor. If you don't have a lot of technical skills, don't make your life miserable by doing a hack job. I don't know if other motors are the same technically..wiring..chainline..mounting..it's possible that exact motor was used in other bikes but I don't know. But I wouldn't go changing to something close that requires a bunch of trial and error. It's much easier to just pull the existing and drop in a "new" one. The cost of machining whatever damage occured in the existing engine will probably exceed the worth of the bike fairly quickly.
