Rebuilding forks for my '81 cb750f

I ordered a rebuild kit from Honda (blew me away they still can get parts for a 30 year old bike) and I just wanted to know if I'm better to give them to my mechanic or to attempt them myself. My clymers suggested that I should not do them myself because the forks from an '81 and '82 are different from the other year models and need certain tools. Anyone know what I'm getting into if I try it myself? Should I avoid and headaches and just give them to my mechanic?

Hi Venom,
I had a 1980 CB750F and a 1981 CB900F.
You will of course need a centre-lift front stand (which lifts from the steering head, leaving the forks free) @ $79 bucks.
If you have the place, the tools and equipment, why not do it yourself?
30 years ago huh... damn I'm ancient.

What's keeping me from diving head in is that my clymers repair book says I need special Honda tools for the job. So do I buy the tools or just let my mechanic do it.
I do have two sets of forks so I guess when I get to rebuilding the other ones I won't be as nervous as they won't be going on the bike right away. Its mainly the clymers books warnings about doing it yourself that got me alittle nervous.

Yes, the tools - who knows if even your mechanic will have them?
I mean if they're truly old and obscure...
(The tools not the mechanic, heheh)
An older mechanic who used to work in Honda shops would probably know about them at least.

Good point. I'll ask him before I hand them over. He seems pretty confident that he knows the forks inside and out. Us still try myself but after more reading my book say I also would need an hydraulic press whichi don't have. So now I know its outta my hands. Thanks for response.

If the forks are the standard non-adjustable spring and piston type then the only special tool you need is the seal driver. I found a piece of ABS pipe at the hardware store that worked and it cost $2. Or you can just take it in a shop and have them install the seals for $10-$20.

They are air /oil forks. On top of that is a full rebuild not just seals. I'm heading off to Honda on hensall to pick up the kit now.
