Really dumb powder coating question

I guess no question is dumb but....... I need to have crankcases and R/L covers powder coated satin black for a restore I'm in the middle off. The problem is that the covers have plastic disks that bolt on to the outside. There are about 4" in diameter and 1/8" thick. They are in good condition but over the years they have weathered to a nice powdery gray.

Can they be powdercoated?

I think the first problem is that they don't conduct electricty so it would be kind of hard to build up a static charge on them. The other issue is they may melt in the oven, although they are probably some kind of thermoplastic as they are part of the motor.

I may end up just painting them but its going to be hard to match. The other option would be to paint everything with a single stage uerathane.

Thoughts or comments?????

I would think they would melt. When I had my rear sets done the plastic bushing inside the brake pedal disappeared. I thought it was metal but found out otherwise.

plastic melts and powder coat ovens cure at 350+ degrees so no you cant powder coat plastic

I dont know if its too late for you but I tried this at the weekend with a plastic gas tank from a RM125 following this guys method.

I used a low cure polyester and preheated the part and baked it at 250F. It's a PITA to get an even coat as there is no static charge on the part but it turned out OK. Suzuki tanks of that era seem to be PET which melts around 250C or 480F so it stood up OK. If it were LDPE I dont think it would have stood up, you may just be able to get away with HDPE.

I don't think any powder coating shop will touch this but if you want to give it a try I have some low cure semi-gloss and satin black. I take no responsibility though :)

Tremclad makes a "Textured" Finish in a can that is a dead match to the flat black texture finish that most powder coating places use. We use it all the time at my work fo Bumpers that come in with scratches from shipping and you cant even tell where we have sprayed and blended it in.
