RC Planes

That’s a toy for someone with very deep pockets and a lot of spare time. Not something you’d ever see at 99.999% of model fields.

Last I looked a single model turbine engine was thousands of dollars.

my ex and I used to build and fly RC planes back in our early 20s (so about 30 years ago)...we were part of the RC Ready Models club in Milton and flew a couple of kilometers south of the Milton Hospital on 1st line, just west of the CN rail track...a member owned the property and he let us sod it, put in a shed to keep our equipment in, a port a potty and man, did we have fun...the ex built a replica Sukoi (spelling ?) and it had an 8 foot wing span...mine were a lot smaller and I was great on doing flips and knife edges with it...we had a couple of real pilots join us a few times and they had a hard time controlling them because it's so different from being in a cockpit...man, those were fun days...

And they are fake turbofans. It is just a jet with a giant cowling. Needs even deeper pockets if they want it realistic. One of my dads friends had a collection from styrofoam up to jets. He sold it all off except for a couple single prop planes as they scratched the itch without being so expensive.

A guy I used to work with made a kick-ass arrow from scratch.

Here's another guy that built an Arrow. He had $15,000 invested plus countless hours and he had a CG problem and crashed it hard after flying for less than a minute.

Why bother with remote control when it’s big enough to lay down inside it?
Umm. Would you strap yourself into one of those deathtraps? Practically, it doesn't work. They are still quite light and don't have enough power to fly a human. In the video Evo posted, if he wants to fly he grabs one of the real planes out of the hangar.

I know...I was being facetious. Still...if I was going to go to that effort I’d probably want one that I could fly in.

I used to build u-control stuff in high school and then started with R/C. I then figured that if I spent the same amount on a boat I could actually go for a ride and went with boats thereafter. I enjoyed the build part of it as much as the flying / floating. Now so much is almost ready to fly. Plug in the wings and you're ready to go. No more silk span, balsa and dope. I gave away a part tube of Ambroid glue a few months ago.

Thanks for that post.

I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Just the whole video. Proud owner of a model shop, put $15k into this, takes off and in 30s crashes it and destroys the front end.

Good thing it wasn't something he could have been in. Lol. He wouldn't have been able to rebuild it. Lol

I thought I recognized that sound....it sounds like my roomba.

In the comments below the youtube video, the owner commented that is has three CG's and he picked the centre one. I don't think he understands how CG works. CG is pretty damned easy to come up with on a model plane. CP is bit harder but I think still not horrible (I have only done CP for a rocket not a plane but I suspect a similar theory may apply).

You'd figure with proper 3d modelling in today's day and age that issue should be resolved fairly easily...but I've never worked with 3D software outside of my primitive deck build...so what do I know.

Just did my first small 3d print...garbage, tomorrow I'll play with different settings.

Forget modelling. For CG, just hang it from a string or balance it on a ball. If it is not where it needs to be, move batteries to compensate.

Maybe he did the modelling instead of the string?

i see some RC planes and choppers flying just west of Winston Churchill on mayfield rd

I totally get model building and I have a buddy who flies r/c helicopters (switched over from planes) and has a share in a real airplane. I even understand the high costs of many hobbies (motorcycles anyone?)

What I don’t get is building a model that’s too bloody big to put on display at home when you’re not flying it.

you bring the boys to the hangar to stare at it over a brew.

The local club here in Waterloo has a huge event revert fall. The demolition Derby is a blast.
