The NDP wants Ontario’s insurance industry regulator to “gradually” cut the premiums that companies are allowed to charge, claiming the industry has been sitting on $2 billion in savings since the government limited claim payouts in 2010.

--

Wynne must create common ground and so far, it’s not going well. Palumbo claims that NDP members have oversimplified the solution. “They don’t understand (the industry) and they haven’t made an attempt to understand it,” he says.

The average annual premium in the Toronto area is roughly $2,000, compared to $1,142 in the Waterloo region or $1,093 in Peterborough. Province-wide, Ontario’s premiums are nearly 50 per cent higher than comparable auto insurance programs in Alberta and the Maritimes.

I think the cost in Toronto is justified. If you go anywhere else in Canada, you'll quickly realize that Toronto area drivers really are the worst drivers there are. Other areas may be a lot more aggressive (Vancouver, Montreal) but they actually know how to drive. Toronto drivers, no so much. The premiums paid are compensation for lack of skill. It's something in the water I guess. Remember, you are not paying insurance based on how well you drive, but because some other retard is going to hit you eventually.

so why not charge higher premiums for those that don't know how to drive or have accidents, or just plain ole suck.....

why lump us all with the garbage, why do I need to pay twice as much, because some jack off don't know how to drive.....

I have been driving since I was 16 and in over 30 years of driving not a single claim or accident, I did get rear ended once (not my fault, I was stopped at a red light), so why do I have to pay through the nose......why not start everyone at 1200 per year, and increase them if they have an accident or what ever....

but why start us off at 4 grand and work our way down, that is just a friggen money grab, like I said before insurance companies are just legal extortionists....plain and simple................

.

You mean start at 4 grand work your way down, then slowly work your way back up...

Brampton residents pay the highest premiums in Ontario. And I can see why. There are so many bad drivers here. But are high insurance premiums the way to make better drivers? I think we need to tighten up licensing and mandate more driver education.

^This. Stricter vision testing requirements, mandatory driving and knowledge tests every 5 years (or so). Police that give tickets for bad driving, not just speeding.

Did we all forget about the rampant insurance fraud committed in the GTA? That's got to be a factor.

Because the dangerous drivers may have a clean record until they have a serious crash. And since it's illegal to rate people based on race, there's no way for the insurers to know who the bad drivers are.

Totally legal to to rate people based on gender though... (even though it technically isnt right?)

Dunno about the legality, guess it must be legal, but at least it makes sense since men are a higher risk than women, especially for certain age groups.

I was stuck behind a Brampton driving school instructor car getting onto the 410-S at Mayfield last week and the driver was going at a steady 30kph around the onramp (with about 10 other vehicles stuck behind), which i can forgive---as it might have been the persons first day driving, etc....but the part that was incredible was that once we got onto the highway---they moved over to the left lane and coasted in a big rigs blind spot---both the car and the truck at about 80kph....finally the truck got up to speed and pulled away...i stayed on the left- mistakenly thinking that the instructor would have the driver move into the right lane....nope...obliviously kept driving along at exactly 100 in the left lane...i waited a bit longer than i normally would have- cause i really wanted to see how long it would take for the 'instructor' to have them get in the proper lane----finally got sick of waiting and ended up passing them on the right hand lane around Williams Pkwy (about 3 exits)...

So then what the **** is wrong with race?

Markham was cool until these people invaded. Now I'm paranoid at stop signs when I'm jogging -_-

Haven't there been a whole series of news stories lately about there being large numbers of bullsh-- dodgy driving schools with no credentials or qualifications in the GTA?

Well, leaving aside racism questions entirely, it's not really something you can clearly categorize anyway. ESPECIALLY in Toronto. There are so many mongrels here that who knows what the kids'll look like in fifty years.
