Quick question for the mechanics out there

My BIL's car died and it looks like the alternator is shot. I've been able to source one at a wreckers but it's not from exactly the same car. Can anyone actually verify that I could use an alternator from a 2.0L 2002 Mazda Protege5 in the 1.6L version?

Unless that part is really cheap, and the car is on it's last legs, let me save you a ton of trouble.
Take the old alternator to a place that rebuilds them, they usually stock at least one for most models.
They take your old one and rebuild it for the next guy.
It will be just like new, providing the shop is honest. I paid 130$ i believe.
An old used one is a total gamble, might last for hours, a week, a month, you just don't know.

edit > ps > Bosch part #'s match for 2002 protege lx 1.6 and 2002 protege5 2.0 on a couple sites, so i would think your original idea would work if you decided to go that route.

When he got the parts and labour quote of $4-500 he was just going to scrap the car. This really is a last ditch effort to get the car thru the fall. $50 is worth the gamble at this point haha

Getting a scrap yard alternator is a gamble. As mentioned above, get it rebuilt. I hope someone here recommends a reputable shop as some guys just replace what's broken in the alternator and don't rebuild the whole thing.

If you have a multimeter and know how to use it, you can at least test the alternator for continuity.

Before you take it off try to turn it. Many of them seize over time.

There is a guy in milton who rebuilds alternators. He does great work. Sandblasts and paints them too. His shop is on steeles past the bicycle/ski shop.

This isn't a wreckers in the sense that I'd have to go out to a graveyard with tools. It's an auto recycler. The parts are removed, cleaned and tested before they're sold.

If you go to scrap yard you need a lester#203-404.
Those alternator have a tricky regulator, have it tested before you go to the trouble of installing it.

Go to Dundas Starter and Alternator at 469 Hensall Circle (905 272 3150) and I'll sell you a rebuilt for $115 with a one year warranty.
