Questions about selling a phone

I'm selling an iPhone 4 that belongs to my non-techy cousin, and I want to know if it's unlocked or not. This screen (attached) confuses me. If I can select the carrier, doesn't that mean it's unlocked?

Also, is there any way to reinstall iOS 5 (it has 6 now)?

I dont know about checking if its unlocked or not, but yes, you can go back to an older IOS....you download the applicable IOS and manually restore the iphone in itunes using the file instead of having itunes download the latest iOS.

It's much more complicated than that last time I did it...needed to jailbreak and trick itunes into allowing me to roll back the OS.

The only way to know if it's unlocked is to pop in a different SIM and see if it registers on the network

Yeah, I tried doing that with my 3G and from my understanding unless you have saved the SHSH thingy you're SOL.
 
Future Shop is giving away Iphones5 free and Telus and others are offering dirt cheap Iphone5s.

Why would anybody want to pay for an old Iphone 4?

There are a number of reasons.

-All the 5s being "given away" by the carriers are with a 3 year contract.

-They are running 6.0.1 or higher. 6.0.1 can only be jailbroken tethered. There is no jailbreak for 6.1.0 as of today.

-A lot of peripherals won't work with the new Lighning connector. eg. the manufacturer hasn't released a dongle for the head unit in my car yet for the 5

buyer is a non techy, so maybe some of those items may not affect him much. Good points though.

Diffrnt strokes for dffrnt folks.

Even FREE has a price these days.

Agreed - easiest way to find out is to pop in a SIM card from another provider.

They aren't free. They're knocking $199 off of the ~$800 that the phone costs. You're still stuck with a ridiculous three year contract.
 
You could either pop a different carrier SIM card or search up the IMEI number thing online and it tells you also..
 
Should be able to unlock with Gevey if needed

stick your sim card in there and if it works, unlocked. if not, locked.

I bought a used phone off Kijiji, had the lady put the sim card in and call me before I gave her any money for it.

7 months later and still works like brand new at 1/2 the price.
