Quebec finally getting "move-over" law

Heads up to anyone who rides into Quebec, they're finally imposing the same move-over law as Ontario.

http://www.montrealgazette.com/cars/Quebec+finally+getting+move+over/6714087/story.html

A motorist must:

Slow down in a safe manner. Change lanes if one is available in the same direction to ensure a lane remains clear between his or her vehicle and the emergency vehicle, but only if the driver is able to switch lanes safely. If a lane change is not possible, a motorist must move as far as possible from emergency vehicles while in the lane.

A violation will net you a $200 to $300 fine and four demerit points.

I have never heard of anyone getting a violation for this in Ontario. It doesn't matter what's on the books if no one enforces it.

I have, quite a few times. But it's still not enforced as much as it should be.

Two in one night, in this case.

I have seen this as well.. I`ve even seen cops setting up `stings`if you will where one cop hides behind and over pass and another sits on the side of the road with his lights on.. then the first cop busts you if you didnt move over..

The forced scenerio`s seem like an un necessary waste of resources, but I fully agree with the law requiring you move over.. in fact I would like to see it extended from emergency vehicles to any vehucle with it`s hazard lights on.. ever try to change a tier on the side of the 400?

I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket for this either, but i'm still talking to "everyone" regarding this matter, i will keep you posted.

I agree that this law should be enforced and amended to include broken down vehicles.

Awww, I was hoping it was a "keep right except to pass" law and that it was gonna start getting enforced in at least ONE province

If it was that law then TPS could sit on 427 southbound, just south of 401, and nail every slow bugger who slides all the way from the fast lane of the eastbound 401 ramp to the fast lane of the 427 south, doing 80 Kmh. They'd kill off 2 books of tickets in an hour.

Quebec really needs this law and, more importantly, needs to enforce it given the number of police officers who have been killed at roadside stops there, over the years.

Yeah, but speed kills and speeding is easy to prove with gadgets and numbers... Plus it's the fogies - the main voter base - that are frequently guilty of being (barely) moving roadblocks and you don't wanna piss them off

I live in north Toronto, old people are the least of my concerns...

They dictate what's legal and what's illegal because they have nothing better to do than get involved in politics and their numbers are growing so the politicians take extra care not to piss them off.. Or else....

Sorry, wasn't being political, i meant from a driving/riding point of view

Amen. That would be fantastic.

Back on topic: I don't think the police should waste time enforcing this rule too heavily. "Safe" is a relative term and I can see many tickets resulting from a dispute over it's meaning.

No worries... My previous post wasn't very clear.

My aunt got one. The cop was on the side of the road with his lights on... He didn't have anyone pulled over or anything. My aunt didn't know of this law and just drove by the cop and he came after her and gave her a ticket. She didn't fight it.

I get that a lot of people disagree with this tactic, but honestly, I think it's necessary.

Fact is when the Police have someone pulled over or are otherwise occupied, they often can't chase after cars that fail to slow down/move over. The only way to really enforce this law is to organize stings where Police cars just sit on the side of the road, waiting.

People won't get it through their thick skulls otherwise.

And before anyone hops on the "FTP" bandwagon, keep in mind this law is to keep all emergency workers safe, including EMS and Fire.
