Problem with Google Earth and Garmin

I just got a new GPS and am trying to connect it to Google Earth however it keeps saying "could not find device garmin". My GPS is properly connected and the computer is picking it up, just not Google Earth. Its the latest version, 7.1 something...

Anyone have any ideas or some experience with this stuff?

Not sure, but have you tried using Basecamp? Its what I use for all my plotting, it is great as it uses the same maps in your GPS, so all POI and everything is there. One I have a route plotted in basecamp, I can view it in google earth by right clicking on it in basecamp and say view in google earth.
