Price disparity on NEW vs. USED 250cc bikes

Insurance has finally become cheap enough for me and i've been looking @ the ninja 250r and the cbr 250r.

I noticed that a lot of people are asking for $4000 for their used bike while dealers are now selling a brand new one for $4000.

Am I missing out on something or is the market price just ridiculously inflated? It seems almost crazy to buy a used one when I can buy a new one for the same almost the same price.

Ran into this exact same thing last year. Your not seeing things people actually try to ask the same price as new. The only benefit to purchasing used is if you lie about the tax. As for what I did I bought new.

People are just insane and good deals get snapped up within minutes. A member was trying to sell a CBR250 (no ABS) for $5400 used.

My Ninja 250 sold for market range, I managed to snag it for $3000

After a quick kijiji search I see plenty going for under $3500, some under $3000 since it's the off-season. Maybe you just need to learn how to look.

Perhaps I should have specified that my criteria was a under 10 000km bike w/ no drops / crashes. I do agree from your search that there are many under 3500, however they don't all fit my criteria.

I understand that I will find bikes for a low price, but many of the bikes listed as you've been keen to point out have been dropped and/or have damage to them.

I should have been clear when I made this thread. I was merely comparing a mint bike that has low kms to a brand new one from the dealer atm for 4000.

Thank you for your link. I didn't think anyone would be myopic enough to think I couldn't find a high km bike for a low price, but evidently you have shown me otherwise. Maybe you just need to learn how to think.

Well, my post wasn't meant as inflammatory but since you haven't cleared the sand from your cavity let's get into it:

6 of the ones in the list meet your criteria, during the riding season there are many more than that available. Your first post specified price alone, someone asking a question in the New Riders forum would do well to actually specify his criteria, no? Most starter bikes have minor damage from drops since pretty much everyone dropped their first bike, that's just something one would expect looking at a used starter. If you want a new bike be prepared to pay new bike prices.

Just to further my point, all of these except 2 fit your criteria: http://ontario.kijiji.ca/f-ninja-25...000QQminPriceZ1Q2c000QQminPriceBackendZ100000 and we're almost into December. During the riding season expect about 5-10x as many Ninjas as this to be up for sale.

So to answer your first post, you're clearly missing something. An ounce of civility and one more of intelligence evidently.

I'm not trying to get into it, you are the one who is being rude. I clarified what I was seeking for in this particular discussion in regards to this thread and responded in a way which should have resonated to you that you were rash. There were plenty of ways to suggest that I should look harder, but you chose to be condescending in regards to it.

Let's not nitpick, I am speaking in regards to the broader market that have been requesting in the upper echelons of 3750 and up. It's clear you aren't here to help, so it would be great if you could take your attitude and share it in other threads.

Anyone who believes that just because I am looking for a mint bike should have to pay the same price as a new bike obviously has too much money for my budget minded scenario. In which case, thank you for your time and please just drop it.

If you want a brand new bike then go buy a new bike. 2012 from dealer for $4000 is $1000 off five or take. But you will pay full taxes and dealer costs and it will probably end up being $5000 out the door.

Or you go look at a used bike. That has low kms and exhaust and maybe levers, for $4000 you offer 3250 say you paid $500 as is on the paperwork and you have now saved yourself $1700.

Who cares if they dropped it and there is a small scratch. Everyone drops their bike eventually.

This is exactly why I really hate dealing with the used bike market, and it goes for both buyers and sellers.

Buyer wants a "mint" bike... hmm, lots of definition on "mint". To me, "mint" = baseball card "mint". I've shown up before to inspect bikes who the owners stated they are "mint" but they were rashed or not even given a proper coutesy bike wash before the showing.

Seller wants to sell a bike, and want to recoup as much money as they shelled out when they bought it, or try to get the full amount. I don't care for exhaust upgrades and levers... don't try to sell the accessaries off at full price.

Ultimately the buyer has the ultimate control of the situation. If you don't like the price, you do not have to buy and walk away.

p.s. Early this year, I sold my 2010 250 SE for almost $4k, with about 26,000km on it. It was well maintained and runs like new. I never claimed it's mint. Got some low-ballers offering $2000 saying that it had some scratches on it. I laughed because I was going to get $3300 as a trade in at a dealership. If you don't want scratches, suck it up and buy a new one.

Hmmmm what should I ask for my 2012 Ninja 250 with less than 4,000km.... did I mention it's Mint?

Pretty normal, people want to get what they paid back out of the bike. Doesn't help that companies like Yamaha lowered the price of their 2012 250's by almost $1000. Sure killed the trade in value of my 2003 Virago 250 :)

Is there no book value that the ministry goes by? Cars do, are motorcycles exempt?

While I don't have a problem with a bike that has been dropped, I'm thinking it would be easier to sell later down the road if I choose to.

There is no book.

Do what everyone else seems to do and fix whatever is broken and then you can put "garage kept, babied, oil changes every 2000km, never tracked, never stunted, never dropped, mint condition" in your ad when you sell it. ;)

if you want mint go buy brand new , if you want good condition used that may have a scratch or 2 and your not desperate to buy right now keep looking good deals do pop up but most the time when a good deal pops up there gone same day so dont hesitate i seen my ninja 250 last month on a sunday afternoon and later that night i had already borrowed a truck and trailer and drove an hour to go pick it up just because i didnt want someone that lived closer to go get it the next day before i could get there with a better offer and i searched for 2 months for a good deal
