Just came up on their site for those in search of a sports bike. 2009 Ducati Monster with 1726km on the clock. Auction ends June 30, 2013.

Sold as-is meaning probably not certified. Upside to this auction is there's no auction premium; downside is taxes come extra.

For the right price would be good. But its only a 696.
Things i would worry about are:
New battery already? Probably improperly stored.
Only 1762kms with service light on? Meaning they went almost 1000km over the first service without doing the service. To me and my opinion shows no pride of ownership, but I could be wrong.
In any case I would'nt pay more than 4500 but I'm paranoid about auction bikes. Who knows the history lol

It looks like the fuel light to me, my service warning never came up at 1000kms

This has probably been sitting in a police evidence lockup for three years. Maybe never touched to preserve chain of custody. I'm not surprised.

If you go into something like this without knowing the risks, shame on you. But, you could pick up a bargin if you go in with wide open eyes and don't underestimate the problems that you might encounter. That's how I got my Moto Guzzi.

The bidding has reachead $6,003.50 as of today. Not a bad price for a '09 Monster.

P.S. what's with the three different dudes posing with the bike? LOL It's a Police auction after all.

They are top canadian male models demonstrating the condition of the bike (running, rideable condition).

Can you inspect the bike before bidding? I'm too lazy today to read the faq

+1 on fuel light. There is no service light, it's just a message when you start up that it is up for service.

The service "indicator" is the wrench that appears on the far right of the bottom display (beside the 0 in the picture). This bike requires the 1000km service or needs to be reset, if service was performed.

I'm sure the bike is perfectly fine after 1000km, it will not implode if it didnt have its cables checked. Jeez

No not much different than a 250 ninja almost less exciting to ride.

Nope not at all it, the 696 is pure beginner bike, try riding one. I don't hate them they just are a really mellow low power bike. I even thought about buying my ex one to learn on instead of a 250 ninja. It isn't much if any faster than a 250. Not hating on it at all it would be a great beginner bike.

I have tried a 696 and it is far from a 250CC. Maybe the one you tried was not running at 100 percent.

2011 Kawasaki Ninja 250R 0-60 mph 7.7sec
2012 Ducati Monster 696 0-60 mph 4.5 Quarter Mile 13.2

not even in the same ballpark.

It was a new one at a dealer and yes it is a bit faster but 1 second in the quarter mile isn't huge. IMHO it is a good beginner bike. Maybe I was just surprised at how slow it seems compared to what I was expecting .

Some well informed people over at that auction. Look at the rims and tires post :lmao:

- Rims measure approx 17.5" x 8"
- Tires measure approx 23" x 8"
- Ventus HRII Radial Tubeless tires
- 205/4 45R16 83H

Is this too much bike for a newbie rider?

Depends on your drop tolerance level.

If you're a noob, the likelihood of dropping your bike is high. If you can't bear the thought of dropping your M696, then prob better not to get it as your first bike. If your riding abilities are good, and you take things slow, the 696 could be a beginner bike.

For meself, I have a M696, and it's my second bike. First one was a GS500F, but only had it for only a 3-4 months. The GS500 was painfully slow compared to the M696 (and some would argue that the M696 is equally as slow compared to a 1199 Panigale, but it's all relative, right?). I've had my 696 for 3 years, and it has plenty of power to smoke most bikes on the road. My bike's been good to me, so I don't have any plans on upgrading anytime soon.

The Monster 696 is 3.2seconds faster in the 0-60 kms. I am guessing they didn't run the 1/4 mile time for the 250; took too long.

All my bikes are liter bikes and I was impressed with the speed of the 696; not enough to switch though :)
